Default Plane crash-lands on Alton Bay

ALTON, N.H. —A single-engine experimental plane crashed while coming in for a landing on an ice runway in Alton Bay on Saturday morning.

Photos: Plane crash-lands on Alton Bay A single-engine experimental plane crashed while coming in for a landing on an ice runway in Alton Bay on Saturday morning.

The pilot said his wing hit a snow bank, spun out of control and crashed. No one was injured. The pilot was the only person in the plane.

The Federal Aviation Administration has been called to the scene. The exact cause of the crash is under investigation. The plane is registered to a pilot from Hampton Falls.

The Alton Bay Ice Runway on Lake Winnipesaukee is one of the most unique airports in the country. It is only open in the winter and hundreds of pilots brave the cold for the chance to land on the ice.

The ice runway is still operational and safe for planes to land.

The only thing you could see from the ramp was the tip of the wing and the tail. RiverRat was about 50 feet from where it was lying. Hope he caught some fish with all the activity around him.

RiverRat - Nice meeting you out on the ice today. So glad the pilot walked away unharmed but so sad to see his plane in that condition. A busy day out on the bay! PS Just saw you on WMUR

Hi Cindido, the pleasure was all mine. Always great to meet forum members face to face, hope to see you and Mr. Cindido again. Stop in again if your in the neighborhood. It certainly was a beautiful day to be out.
I seem to be in the right place at the wrong time, 1st interview in 2009 was when the tornado went through our park, and now this. Oh my the paparazzi and autograph hounds. lol

RiverRat, if that's you with the burly beard. That's a great 'ice fishing beard' if I ever saw one. Looks warm.

Yup that's me, not sure how much longer the Mrs. is going to tolerate it but hopefully to the end of the season.

Cindido Thank you very much for the Irish Bread, it went well with my wifes Penne with sauce. I heated it up a little in the oven and buttered it and it was out of this world. It was the first time my(Marie) has tried cooking a full meal in the bobhouse, she loved it! I knew she would I built with cooking in mind.
