Is interesting how the article mentions that Gulbicki's Towing and Car Repair is always busy, all year 'round, and the other local Weirs businesses are all dead until bike week. Gulbickis has a large 'Trump 2020' sign on the rear wall inside its' single service bay, which is something that most all businesses would not chose to show, but for a tow business ...... once your car is on the hook ..... it's on the tow ..... and insurance pays the bill, so who cares about some political sign ..... plus, by the time you see the sign, your car has already been towed in.

Even that U S Post Office seems like it is dead empty, or closed?

Last March there was a sign that Cozy Cottage Rustics, a furniture store in Plymouth, Lincoln, & Meredith, was opening in what used to be the Dexter Shoe store, but that apparently fell through so that large retail space was vacant, and for lease, all of 2019. I actually thought that could have been a heck of a good location, with big visibility from the street for Cozy Cottage, but it never happened?

Bridge project and detour previously discussed in this thread:
https://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums...ad.php?t=23978
This new LDS article adds project timing information.

Some dispute on the 18-mile figure; sounds closer to 12.

Why is that? Are we afraid some snowflake will be triggered. The worst part of this political climate is that we are discouraged from publicly showing our unconditional support for our great President. As much as the left hates Trump, I hated Obama. I saw firsthand what he did to our military. He was over his head in dealing with foreign affairs and economic issues. However, it would not even occur to me to silence his supporters. That's how democracy works. That's how adults handle things that don't go their way.

I love it when I see a small business supporting our President. Small business owners know firsthand what the Trump economy has brought especially in light of the anemic Obama economy. It may not be a wise business decision since he may be alienating a good portion of potential customers, but I applaud the conviction.

fatlazyless, what you just wrote is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever read. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this forum is now dumber for having read what you wrote. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

It’s 12 miles, not 18. I live in Meredith Bridge and just mapped it out.

Yes, it will suck, yes it will take longer to head down to Wally World and buy some genuine Chinese junk ( could possibly run into FLL and gets some words of wisdom) but it’s not the end of the world!!

By the way; it’s 17 miles to Alton Bay from the Weirs, not sure who the genius is who thought that detour was 18 miles!

Not if you take roller coaster road over to 106. Up to Meredith rotary and down is 18.

Supposed to be but seems like they should start sooner, in case it goes overtime. Unless that's already been considered. No construction project is on time.

imagine the traffic on Memorial Day weekend if this is not done, Woah Nelly

One might have thought that after Columbus day through November would be the ideal time to do this, but I digress, another smart decision by town/state

Relating to how the repair went on the Meredith Center Rd bridge this past summer. Once they opened it up much worse then thought. It went till this November 4 months longer then planned. Same type project

Default Hilliard rd?

Is Hilliard passable from rte 3 just below Cumberland Farms to Parade rd? Probably not a "truck" route, but seems go straight across. Anyone familiar with this road?

On that screen shot copied from that other thread into post #8 here, note that the distance 19.50 is in KM (kilometers, the way the rest of the world does distance). That converts to 12.1 miles British measurement.

That's why I asked. On Google Maps, it's a line that goes straight across. Seemed too obvious to be missed by others.

Thanks, Woodsy

I don't think any of this bridge repair should be a surprise as most everyone knew that this bridge repair would be happening at some point.

To me, the biggest worry would seem to be the time frame for this project; the existing bridge is very old, and some unforeseen findings during the construction project "could" make this go on longer than anticipated.

Let's hope the crews can get the job done during the estimated time frame!

Just a quick response to fatlazyless's post, it seems to me there was a lot more expressions of hate and divisiveness in the posts that followed than in his.

Here's hoping our country will be more unified by the time the bridge is finished.

In answer to the big question "how" that wasn't explained. Maybe someone with more time on their hands can try to find the plans and see what they say about tsgt.

The plan is to have the Emergency vehicles cut thru Thurstons & the Drive In... it will slow the response some, but not too bad.

The old thread has links to the NH.gov plans for the project. That shows an emergency work-around of using Hilliard road to Channel Lane; Channel Lane is where Thurston's entrance is, east of the construction but west of the main water-crossing bridge. I thought I heard somewhere else that the Drive-in could be used to access Channel Lane for emergency vehicles.

Using the detour as described in the LDS article, google shows a 12.5 mile detour. The NH.gov suggested detour is a little over 15 miles.

Hillieard Rd access would require cutting thru Channel Marine property (dirt tote road).... my guess is for a small unreasonable fee they will be allowed to cut thru the Drive In... using the same access point as Bike Week (2nd entrance)

One never sees any political signs on or in large stores like Walmart or Lowe's, or political buttons worn by delivery drivers for the US Mail, UPS or Fed Ex.

In fact, I cannot recall ever seeing any political signs displayed by a large national business.

Sure, a small business has the right to express politics with a sign, but it just does not happen too often, here, in the lakes region.

On the other hand, when President John F Kennedy was murdered, every store front small business and every large business in the Boston area went and replaced their window displays with a large black & white photo of the late president, all draped in black satin.

With all due respect to your political opinions, would it be too much to request that you stay on topic, which is the detour? 🙄

Once you open that political can of worms the negativity spreads like wildfire. But that's what FLL does, drops a bomb and watches it spread. He likes to stir the pot to entertain himself and there are some forum members that are chomping at the bit to talk politics.

Every member has a right to post to any thread and I am certainly not suggesting he should not post any comments but in his case the reply is almost always off topic. I wish our webmaster could have a word with him to try to have him at least stick somewhere near the topic instead of derailing it.

I agree. I actually enjoy reading FLL's posts. He reminds me of my mother-in-law. We have an agreement to never discuss politics (since she typically ends up balling), but she can't help herself from peppering the conversation with small digs. Most of them you can ignore, but sometimes you feel compelled to respond. At least FLL doesn't run off crying!

Sorry I disagree. It is very annoying and you need to kull through his blabber to get to the actual topic 9 times out of 10. Once in a while he will post something useful and topic related as he did a little while ago in the WOW Trail thread

And the rest of us have to cull through the complaints. Block him if you don't want to see his blabber; otherwise, just move the train back on the tracks (pun intended, and I did not use scare quotes around "blabber" on purpose).

I don’t think it’s wrong to suggest that someone stay on topic, and most suggestions have been pretty mild....there’s no need to get agitated. 🤨

I'm not agitated, I'm just pointing out the futility of complaining about off-topic/tangentially related posts. Half the time, the complaints exponentially outnumber the initial post. See: this and above posts.

No sense blocking. You see his posts anyway when people quote his reply in there comments.

And to get somewhat back on topic....

In the past State Police and First responders used the channel road, through Channel Marine storage yard and up onto Hillard Rd during bike week to circumvent the mobs. I'm sure they plan to do likewise during the bridge rebuild.

It would be silly to even suggest a firetruck going around and up 106 to rollercoaster then back down to put out a fire at the Weirs...

And as others have said, Hilliard is impassable once you get to Pickerel Cove. Unless the state decided to put in a temp fire road through to 106, but for the duration of this project, not likely.

For us living at Weirs, guess it's Hannaford in Merideth instead of Shaws in Gilford for a couple of months. NBD. Just stay away from Merideth on weekends.

Question ...... chugga-chugga-chugga .... here comes dat train!

As many are aware, there is a single railroad track that goes under the Weirs bridge there, along the north side of the Weirs channel. This is the railroad track that runs from Lakeport to Weirs Beach to Meredith and beyond. The single track has its own separate tunnel constructed as part of the bridge structure.

Traveling back in time maybe 50, 75, 100 and 125 years ago, when there were active railroad stations in Laconia, Lakeport, Weirs Beach and Meredith, using the train as an alternative to not being able to drive a car across the Weirs bridge due to construction repairs could have been a doable alternative to the bridge being closed. Something tells me that 50 to 125-years ago, it was probably much more common for people to rely on the local train service than to have their own car or truck for getting around and for commercial business use.

Now in 2019 with the Weirs-Route 3 bridge closing next spring, using the railroad as an alternative method of travel is not a doable choice? In the summer months the Winnipesaukee Railroad carries passengers along the line so why not use the train while the bridge is closed to car and truck traffic on Route 3?

"The bridge is closed to car traffic, but you can still take the train" ..... is not a message you will be hearing ...... as it could have been, years ago.

A steam locomotive is a truly amazing machine with its belching black smoke, hot white steam, loud steam powered whistle, many steel wheels, large size, and big power ..... so's as long as there's a train track ..... why not run it with those beautiful steam locomotives as was done up to about 1960.

Chugga-chugga-chugga ...... here comes dat train! .... is what used to be happening, here.

Just in time for our move to our newly built house when we will need to get to stores like Lowes from The Weirs area. Ugh....

On a plus note the article I just read today says it would just be a 30 day detour. I originally thought it would be detoured for the entire 3 months. March-May. Phew...

Arrow ...... down at the Tilton Hilton

Best bet is hit the Lowe's and Walmart in Tilton, at Rt 93-Exit 20. The Tilton Lowe's is the mirror reverse set-up to the Gilford Lowe's, and the Tilton Walmart is bigger than the Gilford Walmart. For example, the Tilton Walmart has a 4' wide slection of fishing waders, plus it has a Tire & Lube Center that does $19.88 oil/filter changes with Quaker State.

In addition to Lowe's, Tilton has a big Home Depot, plus the Tilton outlet mall, and the huge Autoserv car store, so Tilton is a very happening alternative with way more stores than in Gilford.

If only Tilton had a Hilton Hotel. then it would be the Tilton Hilton, and you just know who would be there ...... Paris Hilton ...... right here in Tilton ..... at the Hilton!

I believe the Sun story said there would be access for emergency vehicles which means 1 lane will be open during construction. Wondering if they could issue a special pass based on need to residents who live just over the bridge and work at one of the business' in the Weirs.

A few have posted above that the plan is to be able to get around the construction via Thurston and the drive in.

Correct, it is NOT the channel bridge closing, it is the rail bridge.

Emergency vehicles have the entire channel bridge to themselves and then divert through a super-secret passage to the other side of the rail bridge.

As stated in the original thread, leaving 1 lane open on the rail bridge would triple the time to complete.

Yesterday, drove around the rotary and viewed the construction. Thinking I could jump it! Plenty of down hill speed available. What a start to bike week if Evil was still with us

At least Bike Week won't be disrupted since it's been moved to August due to this whole Covid-19 debacle. But you can still try the jump then if'n your willing!

is the bridge completed yet, I heard it was possibly being completed by the 15th but i believe it was not open this past weekend. I took the detour all weekend because I did not want to risk doubling back

thank you

By watching the traffic on Parade Rd. and Elm St. my conclusion is that the bridge is not open yet!

Default Bridge opens tomorrow!

The Weirs Bridge will be open sometime tomorrow afternoon for alternating 1 way traffic per NH DOT & LPD!

The project should be completely wrapped up by next week!

Woohoo!
