Default The Mount

You know winter is getting closer. Watched on its webcam the Mount traveling to Center Harbor today for what I guess is its winter nap. While it docked could see the Sophie C still out of the water but looking pretty fancy with her fresh coat of paint. Looks like she'll be ready for the 2020 season. Here's hoping

I was always in the belief that the Halloween Costume Party Cruise was her last of the Season …… Did they already have it ?

I hope they're doing well enough to keep the Mount Washington afloat next year.

Seems to me that the Mount doesn't have the large number of paying passengers which it had "back in the day."

Default Toot Toot Toot

Yesterday, WMUR Channel 9 had a piece on the Mount showing her leaving the Weirs for her winter hibernation in Center Harbor. She gave her traditional signal of three long blasts of her horn as she departed. 🐻

Actually, the Mount is always kept in the water at Center Harbor over the winter (unless extensive repair work might be required?).

Actually, if not mistaken, there is a set rotation ……. every X many years the Mount goes to drydock for routine servicing. If memory serves X= 5yrs.

I always thought it would be nice to turn the Mount’s camera to face the lake, rather than the shore while she remains in her winter home of Center Harbor. It would be nice to see the winter activities on the ice.

Definitely seems to be hit or miss, sometimes I've seen it come by and it's packed other times not so much. It does seem as though the evening cruises get the most attendance, especially Friday and Saturday nights.

Interesting. I had wondered that previously but thought it had a lot more people this year.

Default I miss the sound of the old engines....

I could identify the sound long before it came into view.

Default Sound of the old engines.

Living on the Broads, I can actually tell what time it is just by hearing the engines. The cruise were pretty much on time.
Today, you can't hear the engines, but you can hear the band/Muzak.

The Mount is such a fixture on the big lake, it would be devastating to lose her.

I hope that the day never comes, but what if anything could and should be done to keep her afloat if it's no longer profitable for its owner(s) to keep her running?

Some form of assistance from the government, perhaps, but from where and upon what terms?

Not trying to inject doom and gloom, just thinking of "What if?"

I don't want to see the Mount stop running either, but if it is not profitable then why would you want the State Government or US Government to support an enterprise something that has to be fed dollars (and thus be a burden to taxpayers)?

If it goes under then so be it. Let private enterprise figure how to make money running it.

There are ideas out there (not that I agree) but this could be a great floating casino if NH ever allows gambling.

I hope The Mount is there forever. When we move up in a few months, come spring, first thing I am doing is buying season tickets.

In September and October, tour buses from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and other states bring large groups for a Mount cruise around the lake. Every year, they come back ..... is a state wide tourist autumn adventure that includes Lake Winnipesaukee and the white mountains, up north.

Been going on for many years.
