Default Perfume smell in kitchen cabinets ?

We just moved into our new home and noticed there is a very strong sweet smell coming from a double glassed kitchen cabinet. It's as if the previous owner put a bottle of perfume or cologne in the cabinet and left it there. It's really enterable.

My wife is now cleaning the cabinet with vinegar and baking soda, to remove the smell. Time will tell if the odor still remains.

Thoughts ?

Default My thought...

If I had to guess, the previous owners were putting lipstick on a pig. When they were ready to show/sell the house, that cabinet, for whatever reason, was odiferous. Cheap scent was a quick fix. I'd say your wife's Plan A is a good Plan A. Good luck.

It was the “cheap perfume” remark...

Make sure you spritz it with perfume after, to get the vinegar smell out.

Question Chip-Board, Pressed-Board, Flake-Board, Wafer-Board...

Kitchen cabinets made of particle board will "out-gas" for many years. It's the formaldehyde during manufacture that's leaking out of the processed wood. I can understand the need for a seller to disguise that odor.

But unless this one cabinet went unused, it shouldn't have any worse odor than the other cabinets. Are the other cabinets free of odor?

You can prime the inside with a stain blocker. BIN or
Kilz. Then paint. Should seal the odor
