Wonder if south end of Bear has power? Our camp is across from Cattle Landing

Default Power to the People

Sometimes, power outages on Bear Island are caused by events off-island, so the entire island is affected. 💡 🐻

Default Power

For what it's worth, Mink Island still has power. Since the power lines run from Mainland to Bear Island to Mark Island and then to Mink Island, it would seem to suggest that the outages are somehow more localized on Bear.

Just checked with NHEC office in Plymouth, and they say all of Bear is out. They won't fix it til ice out at the earliest.

Default Ice and Docks

Power out on Bear means bubblers are off, too. Hope our dock survives

All of Bear cannot be out, Mink Islander's cameras were working the other day. Having lived on Mark before, I know we got our power (the supply line came in next door) from Bear, which then crossed over to supply Mink.

I know the power is out on the northern part. I'm sure do to the size of the island there are likely several isolated loops that all feed from a common distribution point.

The NHEC has the number of camps affected estimated at 150.

Sure hope you're right and that NHEC worker in Plymouth was wrong!

Our dock needs the bubbler on.

Double checked with NHEC office, and Carol says for sure 323 Bear, my camp, is part of "a known outage." We're in the cove back of Shepard Island, across from Cattle Landing.

I don't know for sure, but it sounds like the drop to Bear, then goes to the next hop, then to the next hop (hop=island). Power under the water would be safer then running it across the land for the next hop, with the weather problems we have been seeing, there are no trees underwater

Default Bear Power Line Routes

The power line coming from the north end of Bear Island divides at the Canoe Carry. One line turns east and continues on to Camp Lawrence. A second line heads south serving the west side of our beautiful island. I would "guess" that power to Mark Island is provided from an underwater cable that comes off of Bear northwest of Camp Lawrence as there is no power line at the camp's Outpost at the south tip of the island. 🐻

The BearChow cam owner says his power is out, and he's on north tip of Bear near the mail dock. If so, then there's no power coming south from there, I guess. That would mean there's no power at The Carry to be divided?

It does come across near Camp Lawrence to Mark. The cable was just over the property line, on my neighbors lot on Mark.

Bear Island South is just north of Camp Lawrence, he has a webcam. I haven't seen any posts from him in a while, I would be curious to see if his camera is on.

Default Gilford

Varney Point is in Gilford, across from Locles Is. near Glendale / Saunders Bay. Nowhere near Bear Is.

Default Point of View

The Varney Point camera looks north from its mainland location north of Fay's Boat Yard on Varnet Point Road in Gilford. Bear Island is about three miles north of this point. 🐻

The (private) map of Bear I received shows two possible utility feeds to the island from Meredith neck: one at the northern tip near the mail dock, and the other across from Cattle Landing.
The map shows a large "C" shaped loop of utilities serving the northern half of the island, connecting through the Carry, and then a full, closed loop that circles the southern half of the island. If I am right, there is a small spur off the "C" portion that feeds the bear cam, that is only a few poles away from the northern utility easement, and could create an isolated outage independent of the rest of the island.

Note, I can't vouch for how accurate the map is; it does not show the feed to Mark or from Camp Lawrence toward Birch. Aerial imagery is inconclusive.

Default Feed Me!

The feed to Birch Island comes off of Bear Island a few feet north of the main dock at Camp Lawrence. 🐻
