Challenge for all the physics/math whizzes who worked out the curvature of the earth problem, a while ago:
Let's assume the existence of a humongous helicopter to pick the carrier up and fly it to Winni.
How much would the surface of the lake rise when the ship was gently plopped down in a deep part of the lake?

Default OFF TOPIC..A Little

In the early ninety's, The USS Iowa (BB-61), one of THE Four Largest Battleships ever built by the US during WWII was mothballed in Newport, RI for awhile. Prior to that (1987) I had the opportunity to sail aboard Iowa and observe her capabilities. Very impressive. Her sister ships were USS Missouri, USS Wisconsin, and USS New Jersey.

The city of San Fransisco wanted the IOWA for a Museum. One (or more) of their high powered female Senators lobbied to get the IOWA, and raised over $3m dollars to have the IOWA towed over to SF from Newport. It was done. Problem was...when the IOWA got there, the SF Mayor..or whatever his title was... said NO. This is a WAR MACHINE and we don't want it here. So the IOWA was relegated to an 80 mile tow up the river to another place.

Don't want no stinkin Warships in OUR town. Just sayin. NB

My best friend is currently a LT CMD and navy test pilot. He told me funny stories from that ship. It was well past its prime to put it mildly.

For example: He told me stories of the showers only turning on for a matter of seconds then off for 20 seconds then back on. He said you only could pray that no call came on while you were in the shower because you would be suiting up covered in soap.

It was the last desiel carrier left.

He just finished testing and syncing in the new George Bush's cables and landing systems this past summer. Incredilble to hear what these guys go through.

Ok sorry, back on topic:

Although Lake Winni is huge The carrier would take up too much room. Other then the logistics of it, getting it their etc. What town / bay do you think it would fit in? I can't think of one.

Sorry OCD: There were NO Diesel Cariers. All the older Cariers, (Designated CV), and almost every surface ship (WW2+) from destroyers on up, had 1200 PSI Steam Turbines.

All the latest Carriers are disignated CV(N)... for Nuclear.

All the latest Destroyers are GAS Turbines. NB

Thank you... I stand corrected. I knew it was the last carrier that was not nuclear...

Have a great thanksgiving.

That's OK OCD. I'm Ex NAVY and live up the road a few miles from the Naval Base Newport for the past 40+ years. You have a good holiday as well. NB

Fully Loaded at 78145 tons the water would rise just under 1 inch.
0.93 inches

It's a big ship and an even bigger lake.

Default Docking

OK, so who has a dock that's deeper than 40'? That carries draws about 38' of water depending on its load. And I doubt you could get it going fast enough on the lake for air ops!

Default don't repower the Mount

In place of repowering the Mount it could have been replaced by a carrier...

Thanks, Rattlesnake Guy. I assumed it would have been a bit more (like 2 or three inches).

Actually I think you are both right - the gas turbine engine (essentially a jet engine) burns kerosene or high grade diesel fuel.

Staying in the theme of "coming attraction".

Sit it next to the broads. Declare it a "dive destination" for those that like to stay above the waters surface!

Red face Dithering a Diving Donation's Decommissioning...

A U.S. Navy ship recently became a tourist attraction for scuba divers and snorkelers. At half that carrier's length—it cost over $8 million just to sink that "donation" to the bottom.

Carrier USS JOHN F. KENNEDY details, and how Congress dithered in decommissioning this carrier.

Default JFK Island

Somegood suggestions here on how to use the carrier. I would make it the next island. Imagine the possibilities of this. An amusement complex complete with skydiving, miniture golf, restaurants, and a whole new area for rafting with no residents to object.

Scrub it and sink it as a dive attraction.

If not the actual one, then maybe a cheap knock-off replica. Fun place to lollygag for a spell.

An invitation could include a photo with the caption, "Thou Shalt Idle on False Warship."

Thumbs up The next resort

Find some developer to rehab it. Make condos and a resort out of the ship. Imagine the taxes some local town could collect from such a place. Complete with indoor/outdoor swimming, water park and all the attractions. Useful during all seasons.
