Default The Old Bittersweet

I was driving down Center Street in Wolfeboro and noticed some construction activity on the long abandoned restaurant up on the hill. It appears some landscaping is being done, including the construction of a rock wall and some tree removal. Does anyone know if this property will be a restaurant again? Though I never was a customer, the space from the street always seemed to have a high charm potential.

The "old Bittersweet" will not be a restaurant. It has been purchased to be used for a private home and has received some local tax relief as it is an historic barn structure. The stone work looks wonderful.

The barn was built in 1890 and was the site of Goldthwaite Manor, which offered both lodging and dining from 1935 to 1953. It was then operated as the Bittersweet Restaurant from 1954 to 2005, and in 2008 it was operated for one year as The Barn Door Tavern & Grill. It has been vacant for at least six years. James Marchese purchased the property and decided to restore the barn to its original state (rather than reopen it as a restaurant) and to convert an addition to the building as a residence.

This structure is "steeped in history" as they say https://books.google.com/books?id=WI...feboro&f=false

I have not heard anything lately but I did notice a bit of work going on, too. We ate there many, many times over the years and had many company parties there. The last I heard was that it was not going to be a business. It has been too long since it was a business. But maybe they could get a special exception?
