Default Hart's Saturday Prime Rib Special...

...We did the Saturday night Prime Rib special last night, (take out), and it was excellent. Hart's seems to take (more than) its fair share of bumps and bruises on this forum, but we've always found their turkey dinners to be very good, as was the Saturday Prime Rib. Definitely recommend it!

Hart's is one of our favorite spots. We did take out several times over the summer. I think we ate outside once, with our dogs . Glad to hear your helping support them.

What do they charge for that? Was it cooked the way you like it?

That is like going to Legal Seafood for Rib Eye dinner.
They do Turkey really well, perhaps should stick to that.

That’s a little harsh and unnecessary. Btw ever hear of surf and turf?

I disagree wholeheartedly—they don't do turkey well, either.

I also thought MH’s response was rather harsh. I would be interested in a comparison between the VK prime rib special and Hart’s.

I love Hart's. When I'm there, I'm filled with memories of every Thanksgiving I've ever had.

I love Harts for the nostalgia too. It’s just that I find the food bland including the turkey. I don’t cook so I don’t know the remedy. I do love the turkey soup. I think it’s the best thing on the menu.

Sue have you tried the prime rib at the Dockside in Alton Bay? Please go and don’t deprive yourself. I think it’s leagues beyond VK in size and flavor.

I keep hearing this, but I keep getting the Live Free or Fry because it's off-the-hook.

You nailed it above with Hart's being bland—my wife and I joked that they cater to the 70-year-old palate when we felt ripped off last time—and VK has failed to live up to any of the hype on any of our many visits, but Alton Dockside has nailed it each of the three times we've visited this last year.

Definitely report back when you resist the pull of the Live Free or Fry and give into the tug of the prime rib. I can’t wait to hear.

Meh—maybe, but the only ones I see enjoying, rather than suffering through, Hart's are geriatrics* with rose-colored glasses**.

*I accept this may be harsh, but I've literally yet to meet anyone under 50 say they had good experiences in the last couple years since we've been. It's always older people with the "we've been going to Hart's for years" fondness.

**I also accept that someday Hart's may be my favorite place as I'm not getting any younger.

I am sorry you feel that way.
If I want a good piece of fish, I go to a seafood place, if I want a good piece of steak, I go to a steakhouse. If I want turkey, i will go to Hearts. Simple is that. I enjoy their turkey dinner when I am in the mood or on weight watchers

Default Saturday Nights / Vk Wins!

Like them both but, the VK takes the prize, always consistently delicious with no variations on size of portion. Have never had a sub-par Prime Rib dinner at the VK, NEVER.

Yes, it was cooked perfectly. We asked for both dinners to be "medium rare" and it was spot on. Nice amount of seasoning on the "crust"...not too much, not too little. As to the price, it was not inexpensive...$62 for a "large" dinner and a "regular" dinner. Both included potato and veg, rolls and butter, and some extra au jus. We got mashed potatoes, butternut squash, and green beans. To my taste buds, their mashed potatoes are real...if they are the fake flakes, they're really good ones.

My take on Hart's is that you go there for the turkey, and that's it, (with the exception of the Saturday Prime Rib and when they used to do the Friday night buffet in the off-season). I have tried fish there on a couple of occasions, and it is not that great. The decor/atmosphere is straight out of June Cleaver's dining room in 1955. You are not going to find a cornucopia of flavors on their menu...it is not the place for "muy caliente" cooking, but as Motorhead stated, "...if you want Italian, go to an Italian place; if you want turkey, go to Harts..."

Default Prime Ribs

Hart's OK compared to Avery's. Now that Avery's closed I need another fix. VK is great but a hike from Laconia. Going to try Lakeside in Alton.

When available, nothing beats Lyon's Den!

If you want Italian, you go to Italian Farmhouse, it is a hike but worth it.
If you are in a hurry, I suppose you can go to Fratellos.

We utilized Hart's curbside pickup this winter and it was very well executed and the food was great.
