Default ice-fishing bobhouses were robbed this week in Meredith

MEREDITH, N.H. -- Several ice-fishing bobhouses on a frozen lake in Meredith were robbed this week, and police said thieves took high-priced fishing equipment and electronics.

One fisherman said tracks in the snow make him think the thieves brought in a four-wheeler with a sled attached to the back to remove the items.

"For the most part, we're all friends out here," fisherman Bob Myshrall said. "Everybody knows each other and nobody would do this."

Fishermen said they're shocked that someone broke into the bobhouses.

"They just cut all the locks and stole a bunch of stuff," fisherman Chuck Malagodi said.

Police said thieves targeted close to a dozen bobhouses in Meredith Bay and an area near Center Harbor. Some of the most extravagant bobhouses were hit, along with more humble ones.

At some of the huts, the thieves made efforts to hide what they did.

"One of the doors was unscrewed by the hinges, and they took the time to screw it back together," Myshrall said.

Victims said the thieves seemed to focus on items that were easy to steal, leaving other valuable items behind. They said they're glad that the bobhouses were left standing.

"It could've been worse," Malagodi said. "I would've been more mad if they'd tore the door off and ransacked it."

Police said more damage was seen to bobhouses in the Center Harbor area. Investigators said they have little to go on, especially because they have no clear indication exactly when the thefts occurred.

Yet another sign of the times, unfortunately.

Default not for nothing

But every year my house got broken into until 2 years ago. Now I leave nothing in it, not even chairs, I don't even bother locking it either. I put a sign on it stating that there is nothing valuable inside. I've never had a problem since.
