Default Ice Conditions 1-25-15

Just an fyi for those venturing out on the lake. For the past few days I have dug over 20 test holes in various parts of the lake between Glendale and the west side of Long Island and many places in between. The majority of wider open sections of the lake had a solid 8" of black ice. The coves seem to have upwards of 11". The pressure ridges that have formed especially between the area of Belknap Point, Ellacoya, Welch island and Round island are very active and extremely dangerous. While you may find a place to safely cross in the morning, don't expect that same area to be safe an hour or two later. Use extreme care when crossing

My official disclaimer: Do not believe a word I say and check ice for yourself frequently if you venture out!

Stay safe;

Dan

Thanks for the conditions update. We had been thinking about a walk out to Welch but will now pass on that. Not too keen about pressure ridges; they often throw up a barrier just off Welch.

Slick,

You can avoid the pressure ridge to get out there. From Glendale, once you get to the point in the cove, head up the shoreline towards Belknap Point. You will see the ridge on your left and eventually it peters out just past the old Chanticleer or at least it did!! Another place to be careful of it right in front of your shore line. It's a smaller ridge and passable, just don't step on it!
