That's great! So, is it a poster's poster? Or a poster of posters? Or maybe a poster predicated by the posts of posters? Perhaps a poster of posts by prognosticating posters? Then again, it could be a poster of pesty posts by persnickity posters ...

Then again, it could just be a poster, but which one? We have a poster who's skinny enough to be placed in a frame?

Please post!

Talking Pepper, You Crack Me Up!

The poster is 24" x 20" and looks much better in person. Very professional.
IG was concerned about wind resistance by putting it on the end, but on the side it will not be seen because of the mushers. (See crib photo above.)
If two smaller ones would work better on the sides, I have no problem with that. (Would a home printer be good enough?)
This poster matted and framed would make a beautiful gift for a certain somebody.

That is gorgeous... again.. I think spray glue and foam core board would work nicely. I guess it goes on the front!!

IG
I agree! It's gorgeous!!! I also agree that mounting it to foam core board is a great idea.

However, I disagree about placement. If we put it on the front no one will see it. However, if we place it on the back, all the mushers left in our dust will clearly see it!

Default A sign

Maybe we can attach it to a pole and you can hold it, waving to the crowds and the mushers fly by the competition!!

You've never seen me participate in any sports, have you? If we did what you propose, there is a strong likelyhood that I would end up whacking one of the mushers in the head with the poster!

Besides that, I think my red hair blowing wildly in the wind will be enough of a "red flag" for those other mushers - and will not put any of our mushers in danger of physical harm.

Well as we all know the wind resistance goes up with the square of the velocity and I can categorically state unequivocally that we ain't gonna have 'nuff of the latter to worry about the former ! So stick it on the front or back or where ever it looks best As to Pepper and waving objects about ... hmmm ... I'm now thinking of decorate and festive headgear made from Lexan.

Lovely poster...

Things are really falling into place.

Weird hats are very fashionable...although with Pepper's hair whipping at us at top speeds...I am thinking safety glasses are better option...

Remember from Field of Dreams, if you build it they will come...guess what!!
Big Cheers for DRH

IslandSib, I second the Cheers for DRH!

Now, with regard to hats - it has been suggested that I don my rather unusual "pet" hat, which I intend to do. I guess I will be in high fashion that day, and you will be in less danger of being whipped by flying hair!

Perhaps the mushers should have some of these ... to match your hat

ps - crib looks great, now we need some cold to put the lakewater into it's "Canadian" form (solid).

Hmmm, dunno Pepper, the Fire Fox looks fine to me (as in me, Mac, not Mee ). Now I'm thinking if you're truely a parrothead, and keeping in mind the "flyer" portion of the team name, then what you want to wear is one of these ...

(looks a tad warmer than the "alternative" racier, err ... racer ... costume )

Security has been generously donated by "Charlie", a recent graduate of the "Be A Man" Detective School- K9 division. After checking the team members in, he will be patroling the perimeter and ensuring the safety of the team and the "Forum Flyer".

Stay tuned for further updates as they become available!

Quilt Lady - don't forget the "cat cops" will be on patrol too! Isn't it their job to secure the interior perimitter?

One more thing. Mee, I didn't hear Mac say ouch. Did you miss an opportunity to give him a whack for the "fire fox" comment? You're slipping young lady!

And Mac - I'm no "parrothead" I just like to commune with my pet Macaw from time to time.

Question Headgear

I went to the iParty store and didn't see anything that really grabbed my attention (though I did see some mylar red hair wigs, we all could be "Peppers" ). "Mee" searched the WWW for a bit and came up with some possibilities, the better of which I've attached below. We think the duck and stork are particularly apropro. What do people think ... ?

ps - Kudos to the construction and painting teams ! The crib looks fantastic !!

Default Alternate theme for crib

"Mee" thought another theme for the crib might be along Egyptian lines, with Queen Pepper and musher / chair-bearers. So the following costume headgear might be yet another possibility.

(personally I think "Mee" just wants the cute "Egyptian" guy to carry her around )

I keep thinking if we talk about it ...it wont happen ...So I keep quiet...
At lunch today I was measuring from the tree to where the ice starts on DRH's daily pictures ...with a ruler...
Think i might need a detox center for Ice In and my chronic viewing habit.

Default Temperatures will be falling

Once we get past this weekend, temps will have highs in the 20's through next Sat, and lows in the mid to upper teens. Should help the ice formation, and thickening. With all due respect to those who would be coming up from NJ, Mass, PA, etc...the amount of people who would be coming to the Winterfest is far smaller than the fishing derby, and we have a little luxury as far as postponing or not. By the way, AANH is still hopeful of having their fly-in, and the "airport manager" is still hopeful of having the "airport open". He just wants to have some thicker ice before he: 1. brings his truck on the ice to plow; and 2. sets in place an action that encourages pilots to land their planes on ice that has to be safe for their weight individually as well as in a group parked on the ice.

Keep happy, and cold, thoughts .

Upthesaukee - glad you posted, because it prompted a thought (imagine that! )

If the festivities are postponed, how far in advance would that decision be made? I ask because if the date is postponed, I need to have a backup rider! The following Wednesday I'm sailing off for eleven days! Would I be wise to sound the alarm now and have everyone get together and choose a new rider? Help!!!!!

I believe your request for a 11 day sail will have to be postponed as the charoit has been sized for one person and only one person. To change it a this late day would cost millions and the tax rates will skyrocket. The overtime to try to get a proper fit for another will be difficult as you know the high "G's" that will be against another that isn't properly fitted could be disastrous.

Thank you, Pepper, for the vote of confidence! Hopefully, it will not be necessary but I will be the backup rider and do my best to totally intimidate the competition and help drive our brave team to victory!

If Mother Nature cooperates, the Babes On Sleds will be there to give the team a formal escort to the bandstand (rev-ing our engines to add to the intimidation process)!

THE WINNI FORUM FLYER RULES!!!

Now that's the spirit! Thank you, Quilt Lady. Hopefully we will have the weather conditions we all seek, but in the event that Mother Nature does not cooperate, I am delighted to know that you are willing to step up and take over for me.

Exclamation Winter Fest Cancelled !!!

Alton Parks & Rec Commission met this evening, and it was decided to cancel Winter Fest for 2006. While we have a short term forecast of some cold weather over the next few days, there is a warming trend towards next weekend. With the up and down trend of temps over the past few weeks, and ice conditions being questionable, we do not feel that we would be acting responsibly in putting a fairly large number of people in a concentrated area on the ice. Additionally, with no snow, the ice can be very dangerous walking and we don't want to see injuries from slip and fall accidents on glare ice. In the interest of safety, we feel it is best to cancel the WinterFest for this year.

Default Good Call Alton Parks and Rec

BUMMER!! ...I was looking so forward to this!

I did have a concern that if our crib hit some open water we'd be fined for "crib-skimming"!! Apparently no need to worry. McD

I am so bummed. However, I do feel that it's undoubtedly the most sensible decision to make, in light of the recent weather trends. The only good news is that the crib is ready to go for next winter's festivities!

This winter has dealt a horrible blow to the economy, and I feel so awful for all the businesses who are suffering this year due to the lack of tourism. With the cancellation of the Winterfest as well as the Fishing Derby, things are only going to get worse for all the businesses in the area that rely on weather-related travel and activities. I thank the Lord every day that we made the decision to go seasonal! Undoubtedly this winter would have been crippling for us.

Pepper:

Timing is everything in life. I'm glad you made the right call. The warm weather has certainly kept me away from the Lakes Region this winter. No snow = no snow mobiling, limited down hill skiing, no cross country skiing and who wants to have a fire blazing in the fireplace when it is 55 degrees out!

Lots of people will be disappointed of course, upthesaukee, but it's probably the wise and prudent decision under the circumstances. It must have been a difficult one for the Alton Parks & Rec. Commission to make.

Oh well ... on the positive side, now the Winni Forum Flyers have a year to install the jet engines and computerized navigation system in our Bed Race crib!

Default Bummer man

Yup, just as buying new skis, a snowblower or snow tires is instant death to snowfall, DRH's craftsmanship on the WFF crib would just not go unpunished. I guess we can now reveal to the world the carbon buckeyball wax and geeko-like footwear that we planned to use ... surely those Christian Conference guys will have figured them out as well (for next year). I guess this gives the mushers time to coagulate into a fine mass of motive muscle ... either that or take a nice nap. Perhaps we should petition Alton to have a Summer carnival to include a bed / water walker race ? (see above pics) I can see it now ! A Le Mans style start from Downings docks, once around the gazeebo, detour past the perched beach and first to pass under the bridge to Parker Marine is the winner ! I figure we add pontoons to the skis on the WFF crib, wax them up real good and then for constructing the water walkers we could ... oh what ... yes dear ... OK my medication just arrived so I'll have to continue this later, but you get the idea.

With 40 mph winds (see related thread... http://www.winnipesaukee.com/forums/...ead.php?t=2928 ) and the cold temps I am so glad I am not heading up tonight or mushing in below zero temps tomorrrow! For those of you still heading upthesaukee, enjoy but BE SAFE OUT THERE!!!! McD

Unhappy Event cancelled.

Got this message from the snowmobile club.

2006 Alton Radar Run Canceled! Alton Parks & Recreation has decided to cancel WinterFest for this year... "We are concerned about the condition of the ice, with all the warming and reforming, and the fact there is very little snow cover to provide traction while walking. As a matter of public safety we decided to cancel.

Default Glad we made the decision

In retrospect, I think that Alton Parks & Rec made a really good decision. The ice certainly has its thin spots still out there, and there is very little traction for walking on the ice. And with the temps in the twenty's with a fairly steady breeze, wind chills would be down to the single numbers --- not a good thing for standing around on the open bay.

Ice was still too thin to think about bringing in the planes for the fly in, and with no snow cover over the top of the ice, there would be little or no control for steering the planes.

Hated to see it get cancelled, but life's too short, and there is always next year!!!!!!

I agree totally. While the bay appeared mostly frozen over, I saw enough open water in other spots to make one wonder how thin the line btw safe and unsafe was. And then there was the cold and wind ... yup we mushers got lucky this year.

Wink ABCCC declared the 2006 winner!

AT 3:00 PM on Sunday, 2/19/06, the ABCCC bed race team was at the bandstand to take on all comers, but no one showed up. ABCCC is, therefore, declared the 2006 winner for the fourth consecutive year.

She'd say something like "where's the bee ... aahhh ... trophy ?" So got a trophy for this year do they ? I thought not. It can't be official without a trophy I say. I think the ABCCC got off lucky this year, cancellation and all. The WFF mushers are busy even as I type, preparing for next year's race with 16 oz curls and/or a nice cup of hot cocoa (with little marshmellows on top). The terrors of the ice they call us and for good reason. I say the ABCCC should be afraid, be very afraid !

Default Abccc?

ABCCC as a long time Sox fan I have learned to say "Wait until next year!"
Clara Bell, from Howdy Dooty? He didn't say anything just honked and later became Captain Kangaroo, or so my mother tells me.

Who is this ABCCC bunch anyway?

ABCCC = Alton Bay Christian Conference Center = Winners of the 2003-2005 Bed Race.

JacksonB - You are a trouble maker!!! It's a good thing that the Alton Bay Webcam is not yet installed. Then we would have proof that it was the Winni Forum Flyers who actually showed up and crossed that finish line first. Please warn your 'brethren' that we are just waiting for next year to crush the defenders and march to victory!!

PS - Let me contact Kellie Troendle of Alton Parks and Recreation to confirm JacksonB's claim!

As a member of Alton Parks & Rec commission, I can attest to the fact there was no one at the bandstand at 3PM on Feb 19th. At least no one who could "declare" a winner.... .

Of course, if ABCCC wants to claim victory in a race that had no other contestants, it could also be said that they came in last as no one finished behind them!

And ghfromaltonbay thanks alot...I had to move six boxes, unpack two others before I found the good book. And you're right: 'Nuf said!!

Whoooa!

Not so fast...

Technically, No - Your team lacks a passenger, as can be clearly seen in the photo below (unoccupied plywood floor)...
