Default Thinking of Retiring in Moultonborough & Need Some Recommendations

Hi All,

My wife and I have owned a second home in Moultonborough for about three years now (Our other home is in RI) and we're thinking about moving full time to NH and retiring in the relatively near future.

I was wondering if I could get some thoughts/recommendations on those day to day things you have to deal with once you move to a new area:

Car Mechanic
Plumber
Carpenter
Dentist
Doctor/Hospital - This is kind of big one for me, as we would be living here in our "later" years. I currently have some health issues that are fairly minor in nature but do require monitoring so finding a good primary care physician is extremely important. Being a guy, I'd prefer a male doctor if possible.

I know this is kind of a broad topic, but if anyone has any input or suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

Red hill for mechanic and smittys for plumbing

You are not moving to the North Pole, you are thinking of moving to Moultonborough.
There are plenty of doctors, electricians, Plumbers, carpenters, dentist, etc.
in Moultonborough and surrounding towns.
Everyone has different opinions and comments on who they like and dislike.
When you do move here, its up to you to find the one that you like the best.
Moultonborough is a great country town with a lot of waterfront on a big lake.
Its not in the wilderness without services that are needed day to day.

Thank you to those who replied - I appreciate the suggestions.

Ray, I understand I'm not moving to the North Pole - however, regardless of where you live, there are professionals that are good at their jobs and there are those that are not so good.

I'd prefer to get the advice of area residents ahead of time, rather than find competent professionals through trial and error.

Car Mechanic
Plumber
Carpenter
Dentist
Doctor/Hospital

Having been to each and every one mentioned above. The absolute best is
Larson's Automotive - Torre Larson
22 Airport Rd
Moultonborough, NH 03254
(603) 476-2591

Make an appointment for all oil changes and other mechanic work. If time allows stay in waiting room and speak with other customers.
Mr. Larson came to Moultonborough decades ago. He owned a shop in Massachusetts. Sold it. And built/bought the shop now.
He has customers that still come up from Massachusetts. By far the most honest and knowledgeable. He does the work himself. Does not attempt to sell you anything that you don't need. His grandson also works there. His grandson just graduated from local community college in Automotive Tech.

Smitty Plumbing.
I have used Smitty Plumbing. He did an excellent job for me.

Carpenter.
If you want a good honest carpenter here is one.

Dentist.
They are all crooks. Sorry to all here who have a favorite dentist.
As a new customer, these dentists will attempt to sell you everything. May tell you that all previous dental work was done improperly and has to be redone. And yes, maybe all of your previous dental work was done improperly. Get a 2nd opinion. Good luck.

Doctor/Hospital.
Might as well try the doctor mentioned above. She seems to have a good reputation.
Skip the Meredith/Laconia ones. They all work for Lakes Region General Hospital. You don't want to go to Lakes Region General Hospital.
If local you want to go to Huggins Hospital. So have a doctor connected/close to Huggins hospital.
Although a long ride, Dartmouth Hitchcock Hospital is rated highly. It is a teaching hospital.
A little closer is Concord Hospital. There are some good doctors there also.
Both Concord and Dartmouth Hitchcock has specialists nearby if you are required to see one.

Good luck. And use some common sense. Ask questions.

The forum has been a great source of information on local services -- there is nothing better than the opinion of people who have actually used them. I have benefited from several recommendations from forum members (most notably a dog kennel and an auto body shop, both of which have been terrific), and have appreciated the guidance.

I haven't visited this site in quite a long time. I need to get use to its presentation again.

Regarding MoBo medical and hospitals.

I bought property in 1970 in MoBo, became a resident in 1996, and became a retiree in 2013. The wife and I utilize the facility in Meredith, and are happy with the care. The Lakes Region Hospital in Laconia has undergone much change, since it, and Franklin hospital became part of new ownership/management. The service, patient care can compete with any quality-care facility.

Much has happened in the hospital management and the physician care.

Meredith

Laconia

Richard Boone (Have Gun Will Travel), his real name, does quality vehicle repair, at Moultonborough auto

This forum may experience an influx of new members from MoBo. There is/has been a town blog that, till recently, was a mechanism for the local community. It has become so censured to opposing views of the blogger, that many of the participants have/will stop blogging on that site.

Good Luck in your search!
