Default New Lake Pup...

Pickup date is 7/3.

I thought we'd go longer without a doggo, but my goodness do we miss having one.

Just adorable. I understand, when you're used to an animal in the house and you lose one, the house is empty.

Congratulations….nothing happier than a puppy.

When our last dog was near the end, we had long adult discussions about all of the reasons why we should not get another one, mostly related to our ages. We were in total agreement. Until the dog actually died. A week later we got our present pup. That was 10 years ago.

For some of us, it’s not really living without a dog.

Right now, no. The breeder we used for our last mini is no longer in business and I've not actually picked up this new pup.

I'll totally let you know if this one goes well, but that won't be until early July.

I will say that finding a mini these days is really hard of 1. Not wanting to spend $3k+ and 2. Not wanting to wait a year. This pupper is liver-colored, which is a slightly less desirable color, so she happened to be available and at a lower price.

I would love to adopt, but my wife's allergies prohibit all but a few breeds.

Names for dogs shouldn't exceed two syllables. The reason being, they learn their names quickly and are easier to obey when combined with training calls.

"Spot" and "Rover" are preferred to three-syllable names like "Dracarys". (Which I would like to name my next little doggie).

So true! Most professional hunting dog trainers recommend single syllable names for the exact reasons APS noted.

My last three dogs were called…

Peg… (Short for Pegasus)
Em… (Short for Emma)
Hay… (Short for Hailey)

Good luck with naming your pup!!

Dan

Names that haven't made the cut (so far): Wiggles, Socks, Mittens, Aries, Athena, Summer. We also ran through Winni (of course) and a series of lake/nature options.

We've got a top two, but don't want to jinx them!

When I got my pup almost a year ago my vet said at least I didn't name him Winni. I think it's very cute but there ARE a million Winnies now. Well, maybe not a million----

From our obedience training point of view, we like names that start with a harder sound and end with an "ee". Daisy, Molly, Loki. Also nice if the name is pronounced the same way by all who will be handling the dog. One old favorite was a Bloodhound named "Gus".

Both our top-two end with "le/les." It'll have to do.

The breeder should be posting pics with eyes open in a few days.

Also, we should be able to visit puppers at 5 weeks, which will be around June 9-12th!

Ok. Interesting. Perhaps if I could have the contact info for your breeder it would be a start. Often breeders are in contact with one another & will know of others in New England.
Thanks if you’ll share your breeders info.

Default Dna ?

There can still be some uncertainty from a given breeder. Our last Berner (Bernese Mtn Dog) came from a breeder in Maine, after we had visited an d rejected litters from other breeders. 10 pups, all true to the breed. The breeder had tried a new (young) stud, and just for safety had bred with an old reliable. DNA testing revealed that all 10 pups were from the old guy and the kid had not performed his duties successfully.
You can check breeders and lineage on AKC.org, and most breeds have their own website as well.
Milo Pearsall "Dog Obedience Training" has excellent info on how to evaluate puppies within a litter, available, used, on Amazon or perhaps through NH inter-library exchange.

Thumbs up Littermates...

Advice from a Veterinarian neighbor was, if getting two pups for "mutual-company" get two from the same litter. (Siblings).

We visited the breeder today and were happy with what we found, so, even though I can't comment on long-term results, dog health, etc. I'm comfortable sharing that Red Rock Kennel in Greenfield, MA is who we're working with and that, so far, we've had a great experience.

Here's a 7-week pic of Maple, who will be coming home with us 7/3.

Default Single Dad

Being a single Dad for a few days is perfect for puppy adjustment without a lot of new people to adjust to. Puppies need a lot of lap time from one person, on the floor or ground, not on furniture. My puppies always liked TV sports. Fireworks, not so much. Have fun.

Annnndddd now it's a heat advisory.

Well, it's a good time to chill in the shade with the pup before we head up to camp Saturday and introduce her to the lake!

I've got a puppy-sized PFD coming, but interested in other water-tips if anyone's got 'em.

An update on this piece: we took Maple for her first checkup and second set of shots on 7/5, and she was in perfect health.

Since then, she's been a spectacular doggo. She is crate trained for sleeping ~9:30-6 and has no problems going in her crate when it's "time to go."

She has only had two "accidents" in the house, both in the first three days and both pee...and totally my fault for letting her wander a minute while I was supposed to be taking her out but got distracted.

Last night, we brought her out for sunset on the boat, and this morning we went to West Alton for her first sandbar and Pop's day, both of which she killed.

All that being said, I'm extremely impressed with our new pup and can now say that we would absolutely deal with Red Rock Kennel in Greenfield, MA again.

Nothing like a new pup post to take the edge off of the Blueberry Island ones. Keep the new experiences coming. I’m starting to enjoy this string in the same way I do Steve’s C-Nile stories.

Thanks, friend! Here's one in her PFD, though we'll be returning this one because it has Velcro that catches her hair.

Majestic pup!

Picked up a new PFD at Parafunalia and grabbed a pup-cup at Liliuokalani this morning before heading home.

Per the previous post, and I'll post a pic when I have one, we ended up with a Stunt Puppy PFD for Maple, and the reason I spent the extra money ($95 vs. $20-50) is that the neck pad slides over the head vs. having to be velcroed/buckled and that there's flotation material underneath to keep doggo above the waterline. All the other vests have the flotation above, which seemed much less effective.

Given that puppers has a slight ear infection already, I'm looking for any way to keep water out of her ears. (We'll also be using ear drops after every swim.)

Default puppy names

Our toy Poodle, Copernicus, actually has several names he goes by and responds to all. Nicky, Nickerbocker, Snickerdoodle, Nickypoodle.
Our son has his brother and one of his friends asked how long it took to housebreak him. his reply. He does it once on the paper and you take him outdoors. Tell him the next time he has to go, go outdoors. Enough said.
I really love how the other Poodle stands in front of the fridge, looking at us then looking at the fridge. He is looking for some Salmon. ________________________________________

Such a beautiful pup. You can tell, looking at her eyes she is a great pup and will be your forever friend.

After her first (basic) grooming—can see her eyes now!

I'm hoping to get more "lake" pics when we're finally up for an extended time next week—fingers crossed the weather cooperates!

Thanks! She loves sticks and helping her sister draw during rainstorms when she can't be outside finding sticks.

Took Maple to the sandbar today, and she did great.

For anyone looking for a canine PFD, I'd totally recommend the Stunt Puppy—she was comfortable in it all day while on the boat and, more importantly, it keeps her head (and ears) raised above the waterline.

A few current photos of Maple Beans. The first is after a pup cup at The Maple Creamery. The second is my son playing with her, and the third is getting ready for Halloween.
