Did you all catch it last night??
On the finale of The Voice, Sawyer and Farrell did a duet of "Summer Breeze."
I was so happy to hear it again in a modern venue with contemporary artists performing it. It keeps this classic masterpiece alive and relevant and makes me long for my boat and Meredith Bay sunshine. Very Nice!! The Breeze Wave 'cuz i'll be wavin' back |

I heard it. They did a fabulous job. Fortunately I was out on our pontoon boat this past Sunday and I was enjoying the summer (spring???) breeze.

I'm assuming it's Summer Breeze by Seals and Crofts?
Fantastic song by a fantastic duo. So many great songs from them during the 70's that remind me of vacations on Cape Cod when I was a kid, playing softball on the sand bars and hearing those songs come from my Mom's A.M. radio. Sorry 'bout that...I'm back now!

What are your favorite summer songs
The previous post by Sum-r breeze made me want to start this thread.
With boats going in the water, the great stretch of weather we've had and summer fast approaching, it would be great to hear what a few of your favorite summer time songs are. I Love hearing the music I grew up with when my family vacationed on Cape Cod. I know, I know...there are so many but there's always a few that put you in that special place or remind you of summers past. Here's a few some new some old...... Seals and Crofts "Get Closer" "Hummingbird" America "Ventura Highway" Alive and Kicking "Tighter Tighter" Bee Gee's "Fanny Be Tender" (Actually anything by the Bee Gee's) Percy Faith "Theme from A Summer Place" (Mom's favorite) Spiral Staircase "I Love You More Today Than Yesterday" Michael Murphy "Wildfire" Gorillaz "Empire Ants" The Sundays "Summertime" I could go on all day............

Stairway to Heaven
Stairway to Heaven--not necessarily a favorite, but they always seemed to play that at the summer camp dances. I remember sweaty palms and major awkwardness when it went from a slow dance to a faster dance.

For sure a tough dance transition in the middle of that song. You go from sexy slow dance to rockin' the air guitar!!

Buffet
I had heard that the song Margaritaville is a true story and he wrote it in 5 minutes in the doctors waiting area after he "cut his heal and had to cruise on back home"

Another One
I've always considered "Born to be Wild" by Steppenwolf to be one of my favorite summer songs, going (way!) to back to my 20s:
Get your motor runnin' Head out on the highway Looking for adventure In whatever comes our way Yeah, darlin' Gonna make it happen Take the world in a love embrace Fire all of your guns at once And explode into space

I gotta agree with CateP ..... "Stairway to Heaven" has got to be at the top of my list ..... but ..... followed closely by:
2) "Communication Breakdown" <--- playing this repetitively at (or above) the threshold of pain got me kicked out of my grandmother's home in Melvin during the summer of 1970 3) "Lay Lady Lay" <--- fortunately I found alternative room accommodations sleeping in the attic of Wawbeek Cottage Colony's office (thank you, Chet Fernald!). This song helped me to feel sorry for myself and always kinda put me in the zone 4) "Hey Joe" 5) "Love is Blue" <--- I'll bet no one remembers this one (I won't bore you ..... it's a long story!) |

either Janis Joplin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guKoNCQFAFk or.....Billie Holiday https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guKoNCQFAFk depending on the mood. "Summer time....and the living is easy....the fish are jumpin'........."

Going way back
I guess these 2 really date me, but the songs that bring me back to past summers are:
Pat Boone's "Love Letters in the Sand" & Bobby Vinton's "Roses are Red" |

I was...
let's just say "younger"... and standing in front of the TV late one summer night watching Midnight Special or maybe In Concert or maybe it was Rock Concert, and these two unusual dudes were getting ready to perform. One was wearing an unusual hat. Just as I was about to utter "WTF?" They started to play. I sat down and listened. WOW! Last edited by 8gv; 05-19-2015 at 10:36 PM. |

"Save Your Heart For Me" (walk along the lake with someone new) by Gary Lewis and the Playboys (1965). Oh yes- summer love!
Another song with good lake memories is: "little Red Rented Row Boat" ( 1962) by Joe Dowell. This song brings back memories because when I was young summer tourists rented cabins in Green's Basin. Each cabin came with a red row boat. I use to see everyone rowing around. |

You're right about Joe Bonnamassa. He's unreal. Saw him in concert in Boston.
I love "Mountain Time" If you like Joe you should check out a band he was in recently called "Black Country Communion" with Glenn Hughes from Deep Purple on lead vocals and and Jason Bonham on drums. Great stuff! Check out Glenn Hughes at 7:08. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iz0FV9QS5tA

Not your typical summer song, but - - -
Whte Christmas! Yeah, I know. But here's 'the rest of the story' as they say:
I was in a carload of campers returning to Camp Treasure Island from a hootenanny (you all remember those, right??) in the early 60s, and of course we were singing our favorite folk songs. At several points we briefly ran out of songs to sing. I do Not remember how White Christmas came into the picture, but it did, and we kept repeating "and may all your Christmases be white" until we could come up with the next song to sing. And yeah, we gave that refrain quite a workout, over and over. And so every time I hear the song, I think back to that wonderful car trip in NH. Ah, the memories - Thanks for the excuse to bring them back. |

"Sunny Afternoon" by The Kinks. Good song to play on the guitar at barbecues.

And if you like Ray Davies and the Kinks please check out this song called "Days" that he does live in Glastonbury England. It's about one of the founding members of the Kinks and though he wrote in 1968 he gets choked up in the beginning. I think of my mentor "Ketch" every time I hear it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcZNOdXcUSY

Sorry, I confused the songs. The Who did a version of Sumertime Blues, not bad, but hard to beat the original.

Not sure of the time frame but one of our [my wife and I] favorite summer songs was STARLAND VOCAL BAND, AFTERNOON DELIGHT. My kids could never understand why we liked it so much. And we never told them either.
Wayward Wind by Gogie Grant is one of my all time favorites but long before the 70's. So many good memories on this thread and many from our days of camping at Gunstock every summer for many years. |

I'm surprised nobody mentioned listening to a baseball game on the radio. I mean really does it get any better?

Summer Song
Although I was only 5 when this song came out,my older sisters were teenagers. The AM radio was always on or they were playing their 45 records (I remember the case they carried them around in). Chad and Jeremy will always get my vote!

So many songs instantly trigger a memory. That first guitar note or piano chord and it's like its yesterday. What's any better than that. Fantastic! Thanks for posting it.

Resurrecting this thread. It's just too good
How 'bout these
"Sunday Morning Coming Down" by Johnny Cash"? "The Weight" by The Band "Summer" by John Denver (Anything by him actually) Here's a couple of recent tunes that I think are excellent Summer tunes. "Windows are Rolled Down" by Amos Lee "Stay a Little Longer" by Brothers Osborne

Pontoon
By Little Big Town
On the pontoon Makin' waves and catchin' rays up on the roof Jumpin' out the back, don't act like you don't want to Party in slow motion Out here in the open Mm, motorboatin' Reach your hand down into the cooler Don't drink it if the mountains aren't blue Try to keep it steady as you recline on your black inner tube |
