I'm looking to rent a lakeside house the last week of August. It will be my wife and I, my parents and two young children (they'll be 3 and 1). We are looking for a quiet area that is relatively close (10) minute drive to a quaint town. I assume most rentals do not have sandy beaches, so proximity to a decent beach would also be good. My father and I will (hopefully) be fishing every AM in a small boat, so a protected area would also be preferred. We have been told that Squam/Little Squam would be better than the big lake? Are there areas of Winnipesaukee that you think we'll be happy with, or Squam? Last year we rented a house on the East (quieter) side of Lake George, NY and loved it. My brother is getting married near Fryeburg (Sp?) ME, this year, so we're looking in the Winnipesaukee area. What would not make me happy is constant jet-skies, ski boats, etc right out the front door, and being 5 minutes from a Mc Donalds.

Thanks in advance.

Default Some ideas

Parker, There are many coves on and Bay on Winnipesaukee that would suit you fine....a couple of places to contact about rentals would be:

Strictly Rentals in Center Harbor
http://www.strictlyrentals.biz/

Preferred Rentals in Center Harbor
http://www.preferredrentals.com/

My family has Rented our place through Strictly Rental, and I therefore know that she has a pretty big selection of properties. And the line outside of Preferred on Sat. leads me to believe that they had lots of rentals as well. There is also the classified here on Winnipesaukee.com..... I would advise that you start looking and make your arrangements soon, places fill up quick...

You're describing the area of Lake Winnipesaukee in the towns of Wolfeboro, Tuftonboro, and Moultonborough. (And Squam—even more so).

Most mornings, a small fishing boat would be fine on that side of the Big Lake. Watch the weather. As an "early person" myself, I'd avoid foggy conditions during tournament weekends.

Just to let you know, we had our wood stove going often during the last week of August '06. Although not set in stone, the temps tend to dip just around Labor Day (or a few weeks early, last year) and while the lake is much quieter, it's not often a warm, summer vacation type of week.
