In case the sky is clear, look up this weekend as it's peak time for the annual Perseid meteor shower. Unforetunately the nearly full moon will dimish viewing somewhat.

My spacenews email said that even with the full moon they've been getting reports of "fireballs" and that you could still see several over the next few nights. We're heading up Sunday, hopefully they're will be a few leftovers. We usually see shooting stars most anytime we are up there at camp on our little dark road.

Just heard my local weatherman saying that we are fortunate to have a New Moon during tomorrow night's peak. I checked my wall calendar to confirm this.

Yup, should be a good year for viewing. We sat out on the dock last night but only saw a few precursors .... and no satellites. Kinda disappointing actually but it should get better.

My son and I watched the space shuttle go overhead last night...twice. The shuttle and the space station will be passing overhead again tonight at around 9:17. We will watch that, as well as the meteor shower.

After the fireworks, we took our time leaving the docks, and after passing Echo Point, looking for the flasher at Little Mark, I saw two meteors, and as we were heading down between Diamond and Lakeshore Park area, I saw one other. Beautiful clear skies, and a great 40 minute slow cruise back to Smiths cove.

At 4AM, Orion had just risen over the Ossipees and there was just a hint of dawn. Just as I went outside, there was a bright, fat and fast streak as my reward. But the first was the best. In 15 minutes, I only saw two others and both were quick and faded. It was worth it though. The lake was still and quiet and showed reflections of the stars. The loudest things I could hear were loons that were miles away and a bilge pump cycling, about four houses down. Tonight (Sunday) is supposed to be the peak, but clouds are expected.

I was stuck in Mass working this weekend and read two posts about the fireworks and the Perseids by Upthesaukee......(my two favorite things)

He described such a beautiful evening.....I thank him for the description..../

but I am still very envious..............

Last nite between 12 and 1 am. sitting out on the dock, looking skyward, I saw at least 16!!
Some were brighter and more prominent others a quick flash.
Very exciting to be able to watch this with such a perfect weather and fantastic view.

artificial decorations so we can see a beautiful night sky.

I remember the days when people enjoyed the simple and peaceful ways of living on our precious Lake. The sky was so outrageous.

The skies up around the lake and mountains used to be so dark. I've been noticing them getting brighter every year with such powerful outdoor lighting that everyone seems to be putting up lately. It's a shame really because there is so much to see in the skies. Our town ZBA stupidly let an industrial building expand onto residential zoned land 2 lots from us. I gave the planning board this website http://www.darksky.org/ and they are now using some of the information for future projects and we had our brilliantly lighted facility toned down dramatically. (Think Lampoon Christmas vacation when he lights up the house). There is some good info on the site.

My son and I are heading out in about 1/2 hour to see what we can see, it's very cloudy here in SE NH but hopefully we can see something!!!!!!!! Best of luck to everyone watching for the meteors, I also read on the WMUR site that just prior to dawn, tomorrow morning, we should be able to see at least 1-2 meteors per minute...... shall we all set our alarms for 4 AM? We went outside at about 9:30 PM to view the sky conditions but there appears to be a total overcast. We saw no stars at all.

Tonite should still have some meteor showers but if it's clear,look to the northeast at around 8:26pm to see the International Space Station with the Space Shuttle attached fly overhead.It looks like a moving star or plane without the blinking lights.

Took son out back to the subdivision, clear as could be skies, but didn't see it -- I think our view was blocked by a hill and the treeline. Does anyone know when it will be visible again? (And heres a funny one -- he calls it the "Endeevor", pronuciation-wise, lol)

Yes, I saw the same thing and I guess I expected it to go from nnw to east like it did the other evening so the northerly direction took me by surprise.
Then I wondered if it was a Persied show.

Last night was a great night for both the shower and the shuttle, or at least what we thought was the shuttle

I heard tonight was supposed to be another clear night, even though the peak is over.

Ha! . . . I did not even notice the start date of the thread! In my post #5 above, i corrected Mee-n-Mac that it was a new moon not a full moon - HA -the full moon was LAST YEAR - ooops! My apologies to Mee-n-Mac!!

I decided to watch the show from the end of the Glendale docks last Saturday night after the MeatLoaf concert. They had so many lights on the docks and from the nearby MP docks. I guess the folks don't care to see the solar system. The light pollution blocked out a lot of the showers. I faintly saw the shuttle. Next year I'll find another dock.
