Universal Hull Identification Numbers (HINs) were first required in the United States starting in November 1972.
Prior to this date, boat builders used serial numbers, but they lacked a standardized format and did not consistently indicate the boat's manufacturing date. (Google) So, a serial number could be anyplace, but would at least indicate prior to 1972. |

I second Descant. I had a 13 ft Whaler that had a 4 digit number inked on the inside of the transom. First time I went to register it in NH the marina wouldn't believe me and wouldn't do the registration. I had to bring them a picture of the boat showing the number to get it registerd.

There were a few small companies and/or persons along the coast/in Maine.
That made a few sail dinghy boats. Per year. Had one decades ago. But mine did have the builders name. Well known for making these small boats. Forgot name now though. Took many months to sell as few seeking small dinghies. But buyer did know exactly who made that dinghy. |
