There will be a Club ride this Saturday, February 7th. Mother Nature has been good to us this past week, and we are expecting 8 to 12 inches today! We will leave from The Village Kitchen at 8:00 am. We will be having breakfast at 7:00, so please feel free to join us! There is no need to be an advanced rider with the latest and greatest sled. Nor do you need to know how to navigate the trails. Please come dress appropriately for a day ride with a full tank and money for lunch. Remember to bring a camera, as there will be photo opportunities during the ride.
Once again, Steve Janaitis has graciously offered to lead the ride. He always has a great day planned! He has planned 2 choices, depending on the number of riders that show and their abilities. #1: Ride to Squam, to RR tracks, to Plymouth. Take Trail #5 to Warren, then over to Woodstock/Lincoln area for lunch. Then back to Plymouth via RR tracks and cut across by Field House trail to Squam & come back on Squam Lake to Moultonborough. About 100 miles. #2: If we have a smaller group of experienced riders: ride to Plymouth by Squam Lake, take tracks to Franconia Notch. Then ride to Bethlehem, Littleton and lunch in Woodsville at House of Pizza. Then return Trail # 5 through N. Haverhill, Warren, Wentworth & Rumney back to the RR tracks and to Squam Lake & home. About 200 miles If you have any questions about the ride, please contact Steve at sjanaitis@acosta.com Hope to see you Saturday! Would it be possible to post copies of the trail maps for these rides for those of us who may not be able to make it on Saturday?
Both look like great day trips. Thank you. |

Question. At Village Kitchen are you able to park trailer and truck and leave for the day while on ride? I want to hit one of these rides but likely would be driving up from Mass and it would save some time to drag the trailer up there rather go to camp unload and then ride up the lake to VK.

I was actually doing a SNOW DANCE for my girl friend in Ellensberg Oregon. She's been complaining of miserable damp foggy weather. I guess it backfired. Oh wait she just informed me that it is snowing!

The ride was great, Steve lead an epic ride in my opinion. Rode over the Squams, up thru Plymouth to Lincoln NH. With a couple stops on the way. Ate lunch at a pizza place, then back on the sleds back to Moultonboro. Only one side trip along the way.....

Three friends and I went on the ride as well. Steve was a phenomenal Trail Captain. He obviously knows the trails exceptionally well. It was a great ride and really nice not having to worry about where we were or where we're going. The toughest part was finding my way back to Black Cat once we reached the lake on our own after dark. I was apprehensive about going at first because I thought so many people would slow the ride up, but that was not the case at all. Steve kept it moving right along and everybody was able to keep up at a good clip. I clocked 165 miles door to door in a 12 hour day. Slept like a baby Saturday night.

It was a fantastic ride. Personally its one of the longer rides I have ever attempted, and was happy to learn more about what my sled could and could not do while keeping up with Steve. Learned a lot about the trail system at the same time. He is a great guide, and you felt confident at all times that we where headed in the right direction. I clocked 157 miles door to door myself. Like others have said - I was sore - Sunday - but would repeat in a heartbeat.

At this time, we do not have an alternate leader. We have some ideas and if people wanted to meet at the VK at 0800 and ride as a group, I would be glad to get everyone together, provide a route and give any guidance I can. I groom overnight and usually try to meet the riders there pre-ride anyway.
I will start a thread on the Progressive Ride in a few minutes. |

Thanks for the Welcome RLW - I think the soreness is a price we all "pay to play" as we get a little older lol. But yes hoping to join more rides as the season goes on!

I joined the MSC club to meet new snowmobile friends. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to take advantage of meeting people or the Saturday rides. Looking for someone to ride with. Don't want to go out by myself. I usually launch from the Pier 19 Parking lot in Tuftonboro. Or I could take my trailer up to someplace near Red Hill like the VK.
Anyone up for a ride to share riding the trails? Conditions I heard are awesome. |

Aahhh!. You're in luck ChaseDog. I'm in same boat. Joined MSC for same reason to meet some guys to ride with. Hasn't seemed to work out. I don't have many friends that are into snowmobiling. I am very close to you, in 19 mile bay and I will be up tomorrow night looking to ride Saturday and Sunday if it don't pour rain Sunday. I will PM you my cell number and we can ride Saturday. I don't like wandering far alone on the sled.

The riding this weekend was phenomenal. Hard to get better conditions. Saturday we took off out of Melvin bay and rode up to Conway. Corridor 19 was great. No rails showing all the way up. Had lunch headed back up Shaw and then home. Closetzguy had two friends up that were way more experienced than us but managed to do ok keeping with them. Great guys. Sunday we took off out of Melvin again early and had fresh groomed trails no body had been on. Not sure where we ended up because didn't have a map but worked our way south hoping to get down toward Johnson's on rt11. Never made it. We picked up 351 behind Kingswood that was all I recall being on. What map connects wolfeboro and powdermill? What trail do you pick up to get down on Rt11?

Yes great weekend of riding! We had about 10 maps between us but nothing covered the East side of Rt 28 between Wolfboro and Alton Bay. We had the Wolfboro Assoc. map and the Mt. Major system map.
Our goal was Mt. Major from 20 mile bay without too much lake travel. Still had a great time! |

There is a link to an online corridor map in pdf format that you can download from http://www.nhstateparks.org/experience/snowmobiling/ and put on your smart phone.

Vita - Not sure if this spilled over from Facebook, but I saw the comments over there that you expressed and thought people should here it over on this forum. People apparently complained about trail conditions in Moultonboro and I saw your anger.
I have not been able to be on the trails for a few years now due to some financial and personal issues but I felt the need to say something. Vita, you and your fellow groomers do not get the credit you deserve. When I was an active member and user of the trails I was proud and appreciative of my club. You guys do amazing work and it is a thankless job. It bummed me out to see anyone making negative comments about the trails when you guys are working your asses off to make sure the riders have an enjoyable experience. A big thanks from a former user and hopefully future user of the trails. I have had the privilege of sitting with you hearing about the difficulties associated with grooming, from winching up Red Hill to broken down machinery, yet you continue to make those trails as smooth as pavement. A special thanks to you for giving me years of enjoyment in the past and hopefully year of enjoyment in the future when I get back into the fun. P.S. You owe me a ride in the groomer! ![]() |

People were complaining about the trails? Make no sense. I haven't been riding every weekend in Moultonboro but have the past two and the trails have been A plus condition. That's one of the problems with internet and forums people whine to much. Big breeding ground for it. Sometimes you scratch your head and wonder if we were better off without it. You know kinda like cell phones.........
How did we ever live the first 35 years of life without them? Ha ha. Good job on grooming! Thank you for the efforts. |

To the complainers of trail conditions: I would be happy to teach you how to operate the groomers. I happen to be one of the guys who does the training and have operated every machine and have groomed darn near every trail in Moultonboro and have worked countless hours on all of them. If you would like to step up and learn to be a groomer just let me know; I would be happy to bring you aboard. There are only a handful of people who groom the whole town, perhaps you could be one of them.

Here is the link to our FB pagehttps://www.facebook.com/MoultonboroSMC. I got a little testy yesterday:
I am a little frustrated this AM. I was talking to someone who overheard a conversation at a local restaurant that went something like this: Customer (on sleds) "The trails in Moultonboro are in terrible shape" Bartender- "They never groom here" Perhaps I should stop waking up at 2AM Friday and Sat nights to "never groom here"! We have a dedicated group of volunteers who get out and work hard to make our trails some of the best out there. No one gets paid a dime to do so. We groomed both weekend nights, but had a ton of people out on the trails both Sat and Sunday. To Don Lemien, Brian Davis, Carl and Terri Eichhorn, Eric Erving, Dave Hicks, Liz Wagner, Vic Jones, Adam Baker, Pete Keenan, Bob Baker, Brian Coutu, Jack Bishop, Rob Lincoln and Cliff Fell- thank you for grooming! Please understand that grooming is not dropping the drag and going- there is science behind the process. The drag has cutter bars that roll and heat the snow as it passes from front to back where the pan flattens and smooths it. The operator is constantly adjusting the drag to pull snow and flatten moguls to make a good surface without pushing snow off the trail. For best results, the snow "sets up" for 2-6 hours before traffic hits it. The set time is critical because that heated snow needs to refreeze or the moguls we just worked out quickly come back. That is why we try to groom overnight (and why you see groomers parked during the day). Rant over- enjoy the trails!! John Harrington, President MSC |

John/VitaBene,
I've been a member of MSC for fifteen years and a silent observer of this forum for the same period. You and the other MSC members should be commended for the excellent work and time you spend volunteering to make the trails enjoyable for everyone. I have seen major improvements over the years. Keep up the good work...! |

I read what you guys do and you should be commended! It is always a few who do all the work and the others complain. How lucky that you are willing to spend so much time doing what you do!! It is very thankless when you volunteer! Good luck guys and try not to let it bother you!!

How much Snow do we have to Work with?
![]() When you read the State Trails Report do you look at what each Club is reporting for Snow Amounts? (1) There are 2 things to look at #1 the SNOW BASE, which is what we have to WORK with. It only comes back so many times. Have you ever gone by a Road Crossing and look where someone has NAILED the throttle and all you see is DIRT? Where do we get the SNOW to fill and pack it back in? (2) NEW SNOW. Take a look at these numbers between Moultonboro and Ossipee. Its possibly do to the Ossipee Mountain Range and that Damm Welcome sign Moultonboro put up several years ago on RT 25 at the Moultonboro/Sandwich Town line. If there is 6 on the Moultonboro side there is a Foot and the Sandwich side. Check it out. We have yet to have a Heavy Wet Snow to work with. It has all been Powder. Thats like trying to Groom Flour. This what we had to work with for snow last week and this past weekend 2/20/15 Moultonborough 6 base, 4 to 6 new snow Ossipee Area 10 base, 6 to 8 new snow This what we will have for this week. 2/24/15 Moultonborough 4 to 8 base, 4 to 6 new snow Ossipee Area 12 base, 6 new snow DisClaimer, I am knot reponcible for any punkuation, Speling or Grandmar in this dockyoument. I am OLD and LEFT HANDED ![]() If you do not receive the weekly Trials Report you can go on line and sign up for it at this address. http://www.nhstateparks.org/experience/snowmobiling/ |
