Irene updates
Was hoping that the folks who are riding out the storm in the Lakes Region would be nice enough to give us Flatlanders updates as to how things are faring up North. Don't forget to tell everyone your location before the update.
Thanks and be safe |

Alton Bay 842 am
Rainfall has been anywhere from light to moderate/heavy and everything in between. We have just had our first peal of thunder and a look at the weather map shows a heavy band of weather just south of us, yellow and red on the map. Guessing we will have a bout with heavier rain shortly.

In Meredith Center, we have heavy rain, some thunder and a gusty breeze from the northeast.
We just got back from filling the water jugs at Meredith town docks and had a great breakfast at Georges Cafe. It was very quiet in downtown Meredith. Stay safe everyone. |

Broads
Report from the broads: just came in from a quick ride to the broads from Winter Harbor (13' whaler). Winter harbor was mostly calm. The broads to barbers pole were not unmanageable but it was clear that conditions were deteriorating and could quickly change. Worst part by far was the rain in the face.

Heavy rain and some wind on eastern Long Island, seems a typical storm, but it is early. 6-8 boats on the floating docks at Harilla's. One guy heading out right now. Last night there were about usual number of lights on Little Bear and Cow so I guess some folks stayed.

Here in West Alton, it currently pretty calm. The wind seems to come in bouts with the peak gust at 23 mph so far mostly from the ESE. About 2.61 inches of rain so far.

3 hours ago wind from NE, very recently switched to SE which is the progression predicted. Still interesting to watch. Lights flickering which is never a happy sign. On Long Island.

They just went by light buoy #12 heading east. Wind is gusty and blowing at some pretty good levels.

At 12:30 in West Alton power has been off about an hour, running on generator. 4" in the rain gauge. Gusty wind and taken down most of the Silver Queen crop 5 days prior to harvest.

Really bad winds at Rust Pond. No way to gauge speed, but a large tree just uprooted next to the house and fell along the property line. Noiselessly.
Can't wait for this to be over. Waves easily 3 ft on the "pond". Doing towel brigade with leaky window. |

West Alton Update
It been surprisingly quiet to date. We lost power at 11:30 am, and are up to 3.83 inches of rain, but wind has been averaging less than 10 mph out of the ESE with a peak of 30 mph. I suspect that since we are on a hillside facing NE, that the mountain is blocking a lot of the wind. Waves are 1-2 ft...nothing that big.

Wild on the Broads!
Mrs SteveA took these at 12.20 PM from Big Pier looking NNE.
Waves crashing over Big Pier and the small boat dock beside the pier. Also have some brief video on my cell phone, but can't figure out how to upload it. (If anyone knows how to do that PM me with your e-mail and I'll send it to you.)

Whole lot of nothing here
Some good wind gusts and rain but no where near what they were talking about.
We lost power for 20 minutes and it came on just as I was going to fire up the generator. I don't believe we even got half the rain they were projecting and looking at radar it looks like the last of the rain is going by now. |

Damage on Swains Lake
I talked with my friend on Swains Lake (Mica Point Rd) in Barrington an hour ago and his neighbors place has 2 big pines on their roof. He has no power and is worried that another big pine on the neighbors property line with them may go too.

Not much rain, but strongest gusts so far about 5 min ago on Long Island. As eye apparently will pass to the west this is as anticipated. Wind SE but will change as it passes

In south Wolfeboro we've had a lot of rain and wind, with some pretty good gusts. We lost our power at 4:00 p.m. and are still without it. The cable modem and routers have a battery backup.

We bore out the storm here in MA with only a few casualties. Nervous to head up to NH next weekend to see what Irene hath wrought. Storms like this scare me - we lost entire trees, but the mail in my wide open mailbox sat unscathed!

Jetski
I got a call from my neighbor that the mooring rope on the jetski had snapped and the jetski went up on the rocks...if that is the only damage to property it could indeed have been worse.

60 mph at Black Cat Island
The wind became sustained at 40 mph this morning, from the SE, at Black Cat. Peak gust was 60 mph from that same direction, around 2 pm. Rain total was 2.49 inches for the storm.
Large debris has been observed in the lake. I've been at the Moultonborough Fire Station since about 2 pm. Along with many other call FD's in the area, we staffed our stations for the storm. We're keeping a few for the overnight so I'm still here. Here in downtown Moultonborough we've been wondering where the storm is, for most of the day. Driving here at 2 pm, I got drenched on one side of myself just walking out to the car. Was dodging debris in the road, all the way down to Rt. 25. The farther I drove, the less storm I saw. At some points this afternoon we were wondering "Where is the storm?" and I'd check in with the WeatherCam -- hard to believe it was reporting high winds, with webcam showing waves crashing over the dock. What a difference a few miles makes in topography like New Hampshire's. Lots of trees and wires down all over the place. Around 10 pm our power went out/generator kicked in, at the station. We're still on generator power and Coop's web site says the whole town is out, with much of the rest of this area. The WeatherCam's last update -- probably made by the last juice in the battery backup -- was at 11:30 pm. Gatto Nero, what's the wind like out on the island now? |

Yes the wind was really howling at 1:00 am today, quiet now. Still on generator in West Alton.
We stopped at Fay's at 7:00 am on our way to breakfast, no apparent damage at Fay's. |

I had power the whole time.
Just want to send kudos to the power folks in Wolfeboro. Amazingly I had power during the whole storm except for one brief outage. I have never seen or heard wind so strong and there are branches and downed trees everywhere...but the power stayed on!!
Still going to look into getting a generator though when I move up here. Other good news is that my shore house and boat survived in NJ so I am especially grateful for that. Going back...oh sometime soonish. |

Went to the little computer store at the roundabout in Meredith and got a cable for the laptop display port. Hooked it up to my HDTV, and it worked fine. With our generator to run the laptop, the TV and the wireless router DSL, we now can have programs through hulu.com when Metrocast goes down.

Of course the new tablets will have the connectivity, and the screen, and the low battery drain...That's be the ticket (although I like the above with a month of block time prepaid on the adapter..) I hate the subscription model on everything we touch!
