I use the web site Liftopia to buy tickets. Not all ski areas use the site, but if you know your going skiing somewhere, it's worth a look. Only downside, you have to pick a day, you have to buy a least a day in advance, and no refunds if you don't go. But if I'm going where I don't have a pass, and I know it's certain I'm going, I book with them the day before. I've also noticed that they sometimes have better prices the farther out you book.
