Default Oil Tank replacement

My oil tanks are getting long in the tooth and I want to proactively change them. 2 x 275 gal tanks. Does anyone have any recommendations as to a good company to use? How about costs when they had theirs replaced. I understand 2 tanks will cost more than 1 to replace but I wouldn't expect it would be twice as much.

Thanks for any info anyone can provide

Charlie

Default Oil tank replacements

The BIG question is - Are these in-ground tanks or in the basement? If in-ground, consult with your local Fire Chief or Code Enforcement Officer, and be prepared for a big bill. If in the basement, ask your fuel dealer if they have any recommendations.

These are most certainly above ground, indoor tanks. I'm going to ask my dealer but I'd like to get a couple of quotes before I pull the trigger. I suspect the price can vary wildly and though I'm not necessarily looking for the absolute cheapest price, I want a good value from someone with a good reputation and Positive recommendations from others

I might just start with an inspection. Indoors means out of the weather and oil inside likely means minimal rust. Why do you think that they have reached end-of-life? As a point of reference, this site (random google search) says indoor tanks can last 60 years:

Arrow ten questions!

Knowing what you know, make a write-up list of ten oil tank removal/installation questions and go visit in-person Dutile Oil, Laconia ...... Stafford Oil, Laconia ...... Foley Oil, Belmont.

In 90-minutes time, you can visit all three businesses.

Is best to bring photographs of the old oil tank(s).

Ten Questions:
Do you do the job yourself or sub-contract it out?
How much will it cost?
Why is it necessary to replace the tanks?

Think up seven more questions to make it a total of ten questions on your 275-gal oil tank replacement. .... ?

Years ago a “old school” plumber told me indoor oil tank rot from the inside out at the underbelly. Nothing you can see. You can purchase drip pans that fit under a tank fill with sand that holds a small leakage.

Yes, the old steel tanks can rot from the inside out. But, if that's the case I would advise replacing it right away. The smell from the drip pan can permeate the air and the odor quite unpleasant (been there, done that). That smell can easily fill the basement or crawl space.

Do they now make fiberglass replacement tanks for the basement? I know they make them to be buried underground (like at gas stations) but not sure if they make them for crawl spaces or basements.....
