I have a question for the forum. Was there ever a ski jump in Alton Bay. I know there was one in/is one in Back Bay. Someone just told me today that there was one years ago in Alton and growing up there, I have never seen one??? But as a kid Alton was off limits by the parents---too far from camp!!

If I remember right I believe there was one set up by where the mount comes in on the railroad station side. Remember we didn't have real strong rules regarding wakes back then. I can remember them coming in 3 and 4 abreast and going around the bandstand.

The jump was moved down to the bandstand for shows. If you cruise slowly on the Rt.11 side of the bay just past Sandy Point near the shore there is a bouy under water where the jump used to be. I also remember the H2o Ski Club using a Correct Craft. I bet the Chris Craft mentioned in mcdudes piece was Mr. Cooke's. See the picture below from an OLD show. Mr. Cooke's Chris Craft Cavalier towing bare foot skiers.

As I recall there were 4 water ski clubs on Lake Winnipesaukee. Alton Bay ski club, Wolfeboro Ski Club, Abanaki Ski Club and Winnipesaukee Water Ski Racing Association. Lake Winnisquam had a ski club, Winnisquam Ski and Boat Club.
The one that draw the most crowd was the races put on by WWSRA. They had 60 mile marathons on Long boards. Started from Weirs public docks over to Meredith, to Spindle Point, by Timber Island, across the Broads and around Rattlesnake and loop back. Pretty exciting to watch.

A knowledgable Weirs Beach bartender mentioned they were building a jump over by Springfield Point that's built with construction lumber recycled from the Wolfeboro transfer station.
Mitt Romney has that stepladder-on-aquaboard waterski manuever pretty much down pat, so could be he's thinking about doing jumps? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
