Exclamation Thunderstorms coming this afternoon

The National Weather Service is posting warnings for this afternoon. There is a cold front that extends the whole length of the country. This will provide some relief from the oppressive heat we have had, but not until it harrasses us with a bit of fury!

The first of several thunderstorms to go through this afternoon hit us in West Alton starting at about 4 PM. We recorded a wind gust of 52 mph on the leading edge of the front as it came through, and we then experienced sustained winds in the 25 - 40 mph range for about 20 minutes. There was more lightning and thunder than we've witnessed here in quite some time. After the first and biggest storm came through, two more followed over the next couple hours. All told, the storms dropped 1.1" of rain on us. Now at 8:30 PM we're still seeing some lightning in the distance to the east, but it appears to be a number of miles away.

Snake Eyes stayed up during today's storms, IG! Apparently there was no power loss on Rattlesnake this time.

Default Man, that was FUN!

Those of you who know me know how much I truly adore good thunderstorms. Today we enjoyed a day off - yup, a WHOLE DAY! Thusly, while running some errands we watched the storm approaching, skirted around the edge of it, and got stuck in the leading edge of it on the way home. At this point the downpour was simply astounding, and it's a good thing I know our road so well! We managed to run ahead of it again, and pulled into the garage about a minute ahead of it's arrival here. Then we sat and THOROUGHLY enjoyed the wild wind, brilliant lightning, and crashing thunder! Wow, it was great. First storm was definately stronger than those that followed it, but they weren't too bad either. The power stayed on, the wind cooled the whole house down (okay, so all the windowsills were dripping, so what!) and we enjoyed the wonder of nature's fury from our couch. Can't beat spending an afternoon that way, in our opinion.

Default You guys are having all the fun!

I got to watch the storm through the webcams. I was looking at the Winnisquam live cam and could see all the boats at the sandbar as the dark clouds rapidly moved in. Some of the boats were a little late leaving I thought. There was so much rain after a couple of minutes that the lake was a blur and the sandbar not visible.

The webcams also showed the darkening skies, then rain. Snake Eyes does not usually suffer from the rain blurring things completely but sure did yesterday.

I am glad the power stayed on. We can enjoy a little relief from the humidity now.
