Bomber Overhead!

Don't worry, it's a B-24 bomber from World War II. (One of fewer than a handful that are left—after a wartime production of 10,000).

Surprised at about 5:35, I heard its deep droning before I saw it flying directly over Tuftonboro Neck. There must be a show at Laconia, but I've seen nothing on the Internet about it.

The last one I saw was banking steeply at about 800-feet towards me—above Florida's Sebring International Airport (and Raceway).

Thought for a few seconds that World War II was back in bombs away action yesterday at about 6:00-pm ..... in the parking lot at Lowe's in Gilford ..... when a four engine B-29 Super Fortress roared overhead, ascending westward, about 500' up ..... a very noisy airplane and a big, slow target for anti-aircraft gunners. Could see the caricature art drawing on the nose but couldn't make it out?

....... doors open ...... 3-2-1 ...... bombs away ...... bingo ..... that bomb was just for you, Adolf!

At 8:58-AM this morning, a bomber is even overhead in the cloudy rain.

'Can't see it, but there's no mistaking That Deep Sound of four big radial piston engines—as there's no turbocharging whine like Lockheed's C-130.

(The other likely big-engined aircraft, aside from the turbocharged DC-7, which I haven't seen for ages).

Not having seen it, I will not hazard a guess. However, the B-29 was called the Superfortress, the B-24 was the Liberator, and the B-17 was the Flying fortress. I've never read that the B-29 flew in the European conflict.

It's very unlikely you saw a B-29, more than likely it was one of the three bombers that the Collings Foundation is bringing around on it's latest Wings of Freedom tour as has been mentioned above. They've been to Laconia in the past and now also bring a two seat P-51 Mustang along that you can ride in and even fly a bit. It's not inexpensive...

On B-29's, as far as I am aware there are only two airworthy B-29's left; "Fifi" and "Doc". They recently flew together at the EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh Wisconsin. If you're a fan of round engine noises, these are some of the largest ones left.

The bombers that are here are "piston powered gasoline" engines. The C-130 is a turbo prop, jet engine turning a propeller. That's why they sound so different.

While these collectors do have two+ B-29 bombers—a difficult restoration project—they're not slated to appear at Laconia. Maybe never?

B-29s were restricted to the Asian and Pacific theaters of WWII. The US' most sophisticated bomber at the time, we still lost 200 of them over Japan.

The B-29 that preceded the takeoff of the Enola Gay crashed into the ocean—in sight of the Enola Gay's pilot. Four had crashed on takeoff the day before.

FLL probably saw a B-24, which made a Wolfeboro flyover in clear skies yesterday about 5:30-PM. Its twin tails bear a distinctive white diagonal stripe.

The four engine plane was the B-24. My dad flew in that while stationed in Italy. I went for a flight to see what he had experienced. Once in a lifetime thrill for me flying over the lake in perfect weather and very emotional. Brave men. Thank you who serve.

We were on our way from Glendale to Welch in our Eastern which has a hard top and side curtains. Suddenly we were aware of a very loud engine noise getting even louder. We looked around for another boat and then I looked back to see if my Yamaha outboard was coming apart and cutback to neutral. Well the sound was from direct overhead so we stepped back from under the hard top to see the 4 engine plane lumbering away at maybe 1,000 feet up. The image that struck me was that distinctive tail.

Yes I heard then saw this too. I figured it was a very special aircraft that was about to come into view.

The deep drone is right. I cannot even imagine what the sensation was like during the war. Im sure it was nothing short of all out intimidation and power as they flew in numbers. Paralyzing at best.

During World War II, we spent childhood summers at Whitmore Lake located north of Ann Arbor, Michigan. B-24 bombers were made at Willow Run, east of there. One time when I was out on the lake in a small wood rowboat with my brothers. a huge B-24 swooped down and buzzed us, flying a few hundred feet overhead. I can still remember seeing the pilot's laughing smile as it passed by.

Just asking.

What were the 2 large planes that flew over the lake yesterday (10/10/2018) at about 11:30 am. Would have been easy to see flying low over the water looking to the northeast? from "Bear Island"

Anyone else see them? Not gigantic but a little unusual seeing them in a pair and the way one turned. Looked like it was going to fall out of the sky.

What a nice day on the water yesterday.

They were C-130s. They flew low over our house in West Alton on a NW heading at about that time. Probably an ANG training flight.

Actually, the B-29 was much faster than the B-17, B-24, B-25 and even the British Lancaster.

I heard then saw them yesterday flying just above tree top level. One chasing the other banking due North over Wolfeboro Neck. What a beautiful day and what an awesome sight!

We were out yesterday and also saw them as we headed from Alton Bay to Wolfeboro. It was late morning as they swooped down low over the lake, maybe as low as 500 feet, one following close behind the other. Low enough that they rounded Rattlesnake and disappeared briefly. Then they banked sharply enough int a turn that their wings were almost perpendicular to the ground; very cool sight. You could hear the props as they approached but jet engine sound after they passed by so I'm guessing they were jet props. Maybe someone knows for sure.

I’m guessing it was Uncle Sam’s Flying Club (ANG). They often fly low level trading missions in New England. Similar topography to Central/Eastern Europe.
