Its good to know that the markers not only have a primary purpose, but also serve a secondary purpose as a perch for wildlife...... They are even more valuable then we realize.....

With that bird sitting there, that red-tipped marker will soon become a white/green-tipped marker. Then what?

Obviously that's a marker that you go south or west of depending on the location of it's companion black spar.

I've always wondered why the red or black markers aren't shaped differently so that you can tell the difference. This marker in particular is very difficult to see the color on a late afternoon with all of the sun glare as you are heading into Meredith. I've done it a thousand times and although I know the markers and know where to go, it is really difficult if you are new to the are because you can't see the color in the bright sunlite. They really need to add a triangle to the top of the red (or black) markers so that there really is a difference.

Hey, here's a piece of usefull info if you ever find yourself out in the water somewhere without a pfd. The spar markers have enough buoyancy to support a swimmer. Just position the spar marker, which is a 4" diameter x 10' pvc pipe full of floatation foam, between your legs and sit on it horizntally sort of like a bicycle. It should keep your head and shoulders above the water. It requires a bit of a balancing act, so it gives you something to do while waiting to be rescued.
Good to know for the next time you fall off a boat late at night or something and get too tired to tread water. ![]()

Isn't it illegal to hang on markers? I mean I can understand if someone needed to be rescued...but that bird has no reason to be there!
