Default loons - $26,700

Todays Laconia Daily Sun reports that Laconia Harley Davidson (in Meredith) successfully held a 'Rocker" Harley motorcycle $10 raffle give-a-way, mostly during Bike Week in June, which was just completed and it raised the huge sum of $26,700 for the Loon Preservation Committee, www.loon.org. Hoping at first to get maybe a one thousand dollar donation from Laconia Harley Davidson, the Loon Preservation Committee has received what is probably its' largest donation ever.

Good golly, $26,700 for the loons......way to go...Laconia Harley......now.....I hope not to see the head loon administrator driving around in a brand new, 4-wheel drive, Toyota pickup costing $26,000 complete with designer loon emblems on its doors........while the actual loons get the remaining $700 for loon habitat improvement.

Ha-ha-ha....my bad....just kidding.....no doubt the money will be used somehow or other (???) to help the loons over a long period of time. Must be nice to have the 'problem' of having too much money and slowly applying all that spending power to the mission of loon preservation.

Harley's and loons......not a team that one would expect to see.....who'd-a thunk it!

We do enjoy seeing and hearing the loons on the lake AND we also enjoy riding on the Harley. Never thought that as loony!

It must be a challenge to figure an intelligent way to spend all that money, and for how long? What will be done for the loons? Will the loons be getting loon helmets and flippers and training in avoidance of all the motor boats?

For nine months/year, the lake is like a quiet loon preserve, and then comes the summer........when it can be like a great big shake & bake......and the loons can get zapped.

Not to be a party pooper here but what about the Saint Vincent de Paul Laconia food pantry, Genesis Mental Health - Laconia, Salvation Army Laconia homeless shelter, and other similar organizations. It sure must be tough for the Laconia people organizations to have to compete with the loons in Meredith Bay.......maybe a people helping raffle next year at bike week? After all, the first name of Laconia Harley Davidson is 'Laconia,' and the official name is Laconia Motorcycle Week.

I wouldn't question anyone's "worthy cause", especially in this economy. The fact they raised money at all is amazing. What they decided to do with it is their business. God bless 'em for giving!

BTW - doesn't the Loon Center employ people and pay wages?

I'd rather see a donation go to a cause (really - any cause) than have my taxes raised to support something I don't support. In other words, at least The Loon Center or whatever else organizations receive money won't be placing Warrants before the voters for more $$$$. People can just choose to give to their cause, whatever it is.

I agree Argie's Wife! What they decided to do with the money is their business. Thanks for your 2 cents Fatlazy.

Talking Loud pipes save loons

To answer FLL's question .... I suspect we'll see some stealth kayaks mounting eco-friendly spud cannons patrolling the various loon sanctuaries. Incautious boaters encroaching on the loon breeding grounds will be ushered away under a furious fusilade of punishing projectiles. (but very quietly)

Or, perhaps, loud pipes that sound like loons. Maybe Harley will bring out it's "A-Loon" Classics line. You know -- "When you feel like a loon -- you'll soon -- be riding A-Loon -- under the full moon".

Only one problem that I can see. You'll be followed by Kayacks whereever you go.

However, the stealth canoes will be brought to the launch by a new land rover, driver by a person who just got one hell of a raise. I totally agree with FLL, 26,000 dollars would help feed alot of HUMAN BEINGS that are down on their luck right now with the recession, losing their jobs and not having a decent income to feed the kids with. The loons are not endangered now and anyone who tells me that I will take out on any lake or pond that they choose and show you more of the glorified seagulls they they have seen.
I do not wish ill-will on the birds but come on, 26k for them , ABSOLUTELY REDICULIOUS. Its a SAD day when Loons or any other animal, are put first in front of the hardships of struggling HUMAN BEINGS.
Yes, it is their right to donate where ever they choose, but in this case, IMHO they blew it BIG TIME !!

Page 15 of yesterday's LaDaSun has a photo of 8 employees at Laconia Napa Auto Parts on Union Ave where they and their boss agreed to donate their July bonus money to the food pantry if he would match it. So's, the St Vincent de Paul Food Pantry get's a $750 donation. "The pantry manager says it has been serving nearly 300 families every month this year, and expects to provide Thanksgiving meals for about 500 families in November. Thanksgiving meals cost about $50 for a family of four."

Meanwhile over in Meredith Bay, those lucky loons will get a Thanksgiving dinner of snails from France, caviar from the Black Sea, clams from Ipswich, Alaska crab, Maine lobster from....eh....Maine, and warmed vodka from Finland.

Talk about a looney-tune?
