Default feedback from the pros?..

Hello Everyone-
This is my very first post to this forum. I started checking out this site recently on the advise of my brother who has a condo near Winnipesaukee and spends every spare minute of his free time on the lake.
I’m writing from about 2,000 miles away where my husband & I currently reside on the French island of St. Bart’s in the Leeward Islands of the Caribbean. We are live in caretakers/ managers of a villa here on the island. Although this is paradise and we love it here, we really miss our family/ friends & living in the states enough to make us want to move back north in May (once the peak season here is over).
I was born & raised in NH. We own a condo near Waterville Valley, so we are looking to relocate back to the area and are interested in taking similar positions at a “camp” on Winnipesaukee in the summers. I wonder if any of you have any suggestions or know anyone who has a high end house on the lake who would need someone to help them look after it either when they are not there or helping out when they are there starting next spring or early summer.
As a second option, we are also interested in getting back into boating for work. We both are USCG licensed 100T Captains and wonder how much need there is for experienced captains for hire on the lake.
I thought about placing an ad, but that seems so impersonal at the moment and spring being 8 months away.. l'd like to get to know more about things first. This seems like the perfect forum to get an idea of what is available during season, as well as get any suggestions, leads or comments from those of you who love and know the area. I would REALLY appreciate any kind feedback from anyone… other than those who desire to call us crazy for wanting to move back to NH from the Caribbean. (I noticed merrymeeting mentioned the water temp has dipped to below 70 degrees. Will I offend anyone if I tell you the ocean temp here is still in the mid to upper 80’s?)
We will be sad to leave here for sure, but are excited to start a new adventure back home in the Lakes Region.
From what I have seen so far, this is a great forum with a wonderful community atmosphere. I Look forward to what you guys have to say.
And have a great Holiday weekend!
Cheers
Holly

Hi Holly
I don't have any firm leads for you, but I can tell you that there are some very high profile folks who have places on Winni. The most obvious that comes to mind is Mitt Romney, he has a place in Wolfboro. He would probably have contacts with other folks up here.

Does Mitt need a caretaker? I don't know, probably not, but give him a call.

**many people might say you can't call Mitt Romney...yes, you can.**

Also, there are some "camps" that have survived up here. I think there are some YMCA type camps on one or two of the islands. If that is what you mean by "camp" let me know and I will try to find out.

If you want to get back into commercial boating the only real option up here that might need a 100T Captain would be the Winnipesaukee Steamship Company (Mount Washington, Doris E and Sophie C) They only have the three boats that I am aware of so I would think employment would be limited.

Good luck and hope to see you folks up here soon!
AW

Thanks Airwaves,
Mitt Romney is a great lead! I am going to look into that. This is exactly the kind of thing I was hoping to achieve here. "Somebody heard there might be something at so & so's house" kind of situation. It's amazing the things that are achieved throught word of mouth. (what is that equal to in the forum world?-I'm not sure... word of thread?..)anyway...
When I said "camps" I meant more along the lines summer homes/ vacation homes not necessarily the literal term of camps. You were on track with the first part of your reply.
Thank you for your input as far as the captain situation. I think it is a pretty limited field also.
I've seen there is a type of Sea Tow/Vessel Assist for Lake Winni. Does anyone ever see them out there? Does anyone subscribe to them? They are extremely valuable to the boating world on the oceans, but wondered about if they are really needed or used on the lake.

We have both Sea Tow and Boat US. You might also want to check with some of the marinas that have larger boats to see if they have a need for delivery captains (Irwins and Silver Sands for example).

Also, check out BoatWise here http://www.boatwiseclasses.com/
They have captains available for teaching, deliveries, etc (Call a Captain)
