Sadly the scanner is presently reporting a snowmobile through the ice on Paugus Bay. Blessedly, the snomobiler has managed to make his way off the ice and is presently at Burger King. Don't know yet if there was a passenger, and hope there wasn't! Unfortunately, the machine is now in the lake.
![]() How much information do these people need the media to publish before they realize this is a seriously unsafe lake right now?

I agree, everytime I hear about someone going through the ice, especially this year, I cannot help but think STUPID!! Some one went through the ice in Wolfboro, last weekend and drowned. It was a horrible thing but so easily preventable.

New Hampshire's WMUR-TV reports that witnesses are stating that two snowmobilers were skimming open water in Paugus Bay when one sled sank. The operator was pulled from the water and ended up at Burger King, where it was presumed he was "getting warm". I'm sure there will be "more to follow" as Channel 9 begs for us to "stay tuned".
Amazing....not! ![]() Skip |

May I just remind everyone that what you hear/read on the tv/internet may not necessarily be accurate. Too many are quick to pass the story before the FACTS are in. You may want to wait before you pass judgement lest you end up like Oprah dedicating an entire hour retracting what you said.

Personnaly I don't need to wait for the facts from the media.
FACT #1: I don't care if he was skimming or not, the ice is not safe and this man should be awarded the DARWIN trophy. FACT #2: This man probably can't read the paper anyways and obviously doesn't listen to televison news reports or he would have known about all the recent events and stayed off the ice. Some people never get it! |

You make an excellent point here. But (and I hate to use but) in these cases I think the New Hampshire Fish & Game along with local fire & police officials are at their wits end over these skimming/thin ice issues. Skimming is illegal. Skimming, unless done in a controlled environment (like the sled show in Fremont) is stupid. And rescue calls initiated by these acts needlessly risk the lives of the rescuers, while tying up valuable assets that are not available for other emergency calls. I know State & Local officials have done everything in their power to warn people about this year's ice conditions and have tried to discourage skimming by imposing high fines. They have used the media relentlessly to get the word out. I remember mentioning to my wife a few weeks ago that if I heard one more thin ice warning, either from Channel 9 or from the Foster's/Citizen, I was going to pull my hair out. And Fish & Game has actually done an excellent job this year of getting factual accident reports out to the media almost immediately to warn people of the extreme dangers out there. And in the span of four days we have three separate skimming issues on one Lake alone! I know there was concern about the facts presented in Sunday's death as maybe being inaccurate. However, as the story has developed it only got worse when it was learned that the victim had previously put a snowmobile to the bottom of a lake. Its just amazing to me the stupidity that some dispaly for a few cheap thrills....actions that directly or indirectly endanger or place unneccesary financial and emotional burdens on the rest of society. Yes, I agree that we sghould be careful of initial media reports. However, it appears that in the cases we are talking about here, the media and Fish & Game have been very accurate in getting their story and subsequent warnings out to the general public. Apparently to some, no amount of warning can overcome a total lack of common sense! Sorry for the long diatribe, but this stuff is just plain crazy! Skip |

I totally agree with Pepper!
This afternoon I also had the scanner on and heard the report of a skimmer in the water near Burger King. Thank God he is OK. Ten minutes later, I look out the window and I see a yellow sled coming down Meredith Bay at 60 miles per hour and it skims right down the Weirs Channel. From the deck all I could hear was the noise from the sled fading into the distance. The Weirs Channel has about a half mile of open water today. Twenty minutes later, I hear the same engine sound returning and I look out and sure enough the same sled is transitioning off the water and back onto the ice near were the Mount docks at the Weirs. To the sled driver: This is completely reckless behavior! Life does not have the reset button that they program into video games. Please think a bit more before doing crazy things like this again. You risk your life and the life of all potential rescuers! I hope the ice thickens or melts. The lake is in a very dangerous state right now and the actions of some make it even worse. R2B |

An interesting side note. Several hours after the ambulance left Burger King with a wet snowmobiler onboard, I heard the dispatcher for Laconia P.D. instruct an officer to go to the E.R. to transport an individual to the County Jail.
Now I can only hope that individual is the same idiot who placed himself and others in danger, and contaminated our lake this afternoon. ![]()

Resident2B - when we used to stay open in the winter months, Waldo and I often heard the scream of snowmobiles as they flew along the channel. That sound makes your hair stand on end, and your stomach tighten, as you wait to hear it either continue on, or simply stop. Many conversations with the local PD, State Police, Fish and Game, and Fire Department all revealed the same frustration as you and I and others feel right now. I do not envy your position so close to the channel right now! I prefer being far enough away that I can't hear-and-fear.

In the course of my business, I drive around the lake a lot. It never ceases to amaze me how many Darwin Award candidates are out there. It doesn't really bother me that they seem to have little regard for their own lives, but I'm sure they take for granted that someone will come to their rescue. We have a lot of dedicated people around here that will, without hesitation, risk their lives to do just that. I know that accidents do happen, but accidents seem to be the exception rather than the rule lately. |

This may be a stupid question, but is there a way to equip sleds with an auto open raft of some kind like the CO2 life vests? They could save a life and the lake from pollutants.
I wonder if this new law for anti skimming having any effect? |

There are certain times when on a snowmobile you have to "Skim" across a few feet, say less than 50' of open water. I define open water as anything other than ice solid enough to support you. The issue lies with the thrillseekers skimming over hundreds of feet of open water. The people yesterday were attempting to skim the Weirs Channel. At this time, the open water extends from 200' from the channel entrance to well past the docks at the 4 Seasons (approximately 1/2 way betweeen the NASWA & Christmas Island) approximately 1 mile.
I don't think the skimming law has any real effect because most snowmobiliers understand the danger and just don't do it. Those thrillseekers that are willing to "Skim" long distances, probably aren't going to care about the law, the same way "base jumpers" and others don't. There really isn't all that much environmental damage to the lake. The oil & gas are contained, and although some may escape its very little. A small 2 stroke outboard motor puts more pollutants into the lake during a day of fishing. Woodsy |

Unless you are taking somebody to the ER I don't see the need. It's against the law. This must be the "need for thrills" or "need for speed" thinking we get from some high performance vehicle owners. The real tragedy would be if somebody dies trying to save a skimmer. |

Island Lover & PBR...
I don't advocate "skimming". I guess in my post it comes across that way. There have been times to get on or off the ice on Lake Winnipesaukee I have had to cross a few feet of open water. For example, there used to be access to the lake for snowmobiles at the Akwa marina. That area there would get pretty thin from the bubblers and all of the snowmachines that use it. I have also had to cross some small streams in ME. I do not consider it a thrill at all. It is certainly not a "speed thing" I do not go out and actively look to cross open water. Woodsy |

Well, I've been waiting all winter for someone to tell me they had seen or heard someone skimming at the Weirs. I've been waiting all winter and was pretty impressed that I hadn't seen anyone doing it yet, looks like they were waiting for the ice to get thinner

I know I would be pretty upset if I had an emergency at my house and rescue took longer than usual because they were all at the Weirs Channel trying to pluck some nimrod out of the water. It would be interesting to hear from anyone that works fire and rescue, how they feel about all this.

...Not to mention Town/State taxes that go towards these rescues. I'm from Manchester and visit on the weekends. I know that I'd be upset if my house was burning and there was a slow response. They had someone from Meredith (I beleive) Fire Dept. He said bascially what we're saying, availabilty issues.
I dont live around there. I'm down in Manchester. It must be difficult for locals to deal with the influx of nitwits. I'm a weekend warrior and I have trouble seeing a lot of stupid behavior. I'm not a saint by any stretch, but dumb is dumb!! |

I think Woodsy is making the point that does not encourage skimming, but there are times when riding on lakes you can quickly come up on open water, and it is important to know that you can cross open water for short distances if necessary. Depending on the situation, it can be safer to open up the machine and cross the water rather than attempting to stop or turn the snowmobile.
If you spend any time riding on lakes you know conditions change rapidly and you need to be prepared for the unexpected. |

Did anyone see the bobhouse that was "skimming" right off the boat launch in Meredith Bay? It's made of, what looks to be, old billboards. It's like 8x10 and has a chimney. It was 50' from ours. We were out there Saturday morning early, and we decided to move our house out to the right or Church Landing by the marina. We returned to shore later that day and saw it attempting to skim. Half of it was submerged with a growing ring of water surrounding it! Bad news for those guys. It looked like it was pretty heavy!
Our neighbors at "The Lodge" decided to move theirs off. Ice conditions declined a bit over last week. Out towards the middle of the bay it is thicker than around shore. There is 3 or so inches of half-frozen snow and slush. Under that garbage, there ranges from 4-7 inches of nice stuff. There are still some sketchy parts where it tests your nerve. But all in all its ok for light traffic. As far as the fishing goes....It's pretty good. We saw one beautiful Rainbow caught by Chris from St. Anselm College, across from the town docks. There was a fatty Laker caught...6 lbs. And Saturday we hooked into 3 hefty Salmon in the morning and 2 more in the PM bite. Three of the 5 were caught by Kern who made the venture up from Manch. Even though we can't do anything with the salmon....I still love seeing those!! Matty Pipes caught a monster of a pickerel just left of the launch over in Rainbow country. The thing had probably 6 smelt in it's belly. Hint...hint.... I broke in my Jack Trap with 1 pesky Perch caught in almost 40' by the docks. Man I thought it was a Laker!! Doh!!! In my opinion...after looking at the forecast and the current ice conditions...Get dem traps ready boys and girls, cuz there's a derby coming!! That's the report for this weekend. Fishback signing off. |

This morning we spotted a deer that had apparently partially gone through the ice and/or broken one or more legs overnight near Small's Cove in West Alton. Today the frozen carcass is providing food for crows, sea gulls, and a bald eagle. I had to zoom so far in to get a shot that the resulting image quality is poor, but in the following photo you can see the bald eagle swooping down to the carcass. He then had quite a meal. The coyotes will probably finish the job tonight.

I wonder if the deer was skimming? My dog made the mistake of going on the "ice" by the Weirs town docks yesterday after his ball, needless to say he wont do that again soon. It looks to be getting thinner and thinner by the minute.

See now, if that deer had been properly equipped with a pair of ice-gripper self-rescue picks he wouldn't now be a dead and floating upside-down-in-the-water lunch for some hungry eagle. Can remember seeing a similar photo of a moose in Moosehead Lake with one eagle munching away. Hey, maybe someone wants to run out there and deliver a bottle of soy sauce for the eagle?

Here's another shot I took a little while after posting the first photo. I was able to get a bit closer for this one, but the scene is still quite a distance from shore.

We sure do have our share of turkeys up here. Usually, it's some dopey Republican with a name like Judd or Craig who's out bombing around on a 900cc sled, out on the too-thin ice, ya-know! Always, out on a fluorescent green sled with a matching jacket, and heading out there to go skimming over that open water while screamimg...Live Free or Die! Definately, another R'publican NH turkey!

Don, thanks for sharing the photos! While I'm thoroughly enjoying the view of that magnificent eagle, my heart is broken over the plight of the poor deer. So glad I don't have to see that part up close.

Neat photos Don, thanks for sharing. We had a similar situation on the MWRA reservoir that takes up 1/3 of our town a few years ago. It was just off the main causeway on a major route. The coyotes and wildlife were eating the deer daily until the police got so many calls they went out and pulled it off the reservoir. It did traumatize a lot of kids on the schoolbuses on the way to school. I was teaching environmental science for KG thru 6 at the time and used it as an example of the cycle of life.

Lin, what a perfect opportunity, albeit a difficult one! Probably would have been a bit easier for all if it wasn't visible from such a major thoroughfare.
I must admit my own squeamish nature still causes me to cringe at the sight of a raptor having sparrow for breakfast, while at the same time I marvel at it's magnificence. For all the beauty of nature, it can still be tough to stomach. Life and death so hand in hand.

Here's an old eagle story for you. One morning in the winter of 2002-2003, I shot a large grey squirrel at the bird feeder and tossed it dead about 20 yards out onto the frozen lake. Soon after that, three crows landed and started munching away, all sharing the dead squirrel body. And soon after that, three eagles which appeared to be a daddy, a mommy and a little eagle landed and shooed the crows away.
What happened next? Not, what I expected. Do the three eagles all share the dead squirrel, just like the crows? No, they do not. What happens is the big daddy eagle picks up the dead squirrel in its' talons and flys about a quarter mile further out onto the frozen lake near some open water and does not share the squirrel. It eats the whole squirrel all by itself, and the other two eagles apparently know enough not to even fly out there and approach the big daddy eagle. What a crummy, greedy, piggy eagle of a bird, that would not share that big dead squirrel. Last edited by fatlazyless; 02-07-2006 at 09:09 AM. Reason: spell-cheque |

Got my morning cup of coffee, looked out the window and saw the Bald Eagles were back. The female was in possession of the carcass while the male sat in the trees, waiting his turn. Among birds of prey, the female is usually larger than the male. Since we can see both at the same time, we can tell which is which. The crows and ravens have flown in for a quick bite but the eagles seem to have control of the carcass for now. It's not a pretty sight but it is the way nature has done things since before we walked upright.

HAwk story - not even close to the same subject but interesting none the less. I've heard stories of birds of prey attacking large prey on the water's surface and at times grabbing onto something that is too big and not being able to let go. I saw this in action for the first time while visiting my father in Sarasota this past November. We were playing golf and were coming around a corner around a pond on the golf cart when right next to us a hawk slammed into the water and grabbed on to something. Could not tell if it was a fish or a gator or a turtle or what, but damn if that bird didn't try in vane to flap itself out of the water. It went down. And then it would surface again flapping, then go down, then back up. Everytime with noticeably less fight in him until finally he went down for the count. Sad but very interesting to witness.

Back to the deer on the unsafe ice story . . .
Right now a beautiful example of a Golden Eagle is in possession of the deer carcass with a Bald Eagle waiting. The Bald Eagle is getting impatient and keeps dive bombing the Golden. What an interesting sight to see! As for the ice itself, it is making a great deal of noise and ice ridges are forming all over. There are large chunks of ice pushed up onto the ice. I'm watching my area so I know where to slow down when and if it is ever safe to go out there on a snowmobile. Think Ice! Think Snow!

Twice, I've witnessed a bald eagle drop down on a diving duck (scaup) at the surface. Perhaps the duck was wounded, lame, or blinded, but it had enough fight in it to pull the bald eagle under the surface for what seemed like a very long time—and several times. The eagle flew off after the encounter, empty-taloned. I wondered about this until the following day, when I saw it fly off with a motionless duck in its grip. Now I believe that the eagle was fatally and repeatedly wounding the duck with its talons under the surface, and waited until the next day to recover the dead—or dying—duck! Not just predatory (they'll pick an egret out of a flying flock of egrets), but an accomplished hunter! I've seen this behavior twice now, so I was not so alarmed (for the eagle, anyway) the second time. OTOH, large fish have been fished out of the water with an osprey's foot gripping the fish (foot only—no osprey). The other birds in the photograph are black-backed gulls—another predator—and a common sight locally. They attack everything smaller than themselves, and they're usually seen perched on a rock or marker having a good, wide, view of Winnipesaukee. They'll stay with floating dead bass for hours, picking at it. QL: Goldens, I've seen out West, but they're not very common in the Eastern states. Since I mostly "bird by ear", I don't miss much around Lake Winnipesaukee. 'Wish I could have heard—and seen—that Golden Eagle. |

I see dumb people--I saw that bumper sticker a few days ago. A parody on the Sixth Sense character who sees "dead people", but something that unfortunately is true sometimes. What thrill do you get out of skimming across water on a snow machine? Buy a jet-ski for crying out loud. They should give out real hefty fines, sometimes the only way people refrain from doing something again is to hit them in the pocket. Furthermore pay for wasting everybody's time who has to show up and pull you out of the water, risking their lives as well.
Do these people get charged for pollution or littering? They should! I don't care how much oil or gas it leaks out. Throwing a piece of trash or a ciggarette butt out the window can cost you $500. Dumping a snow machine in the lake should cost quadruple. The picture of that deer almost had me in tears. I like animals more than I like people! I would have run out to save that deer before I saved an idiot flying across the ice. I know its part of nature, but still. fatlazyless- I doubt you'll see a Republican out fooling around pointlessly too often. The Republicans are busy working. macatac- GET BACK TO WORK. Thanks to Dems like fatlazyless millions of welfare receipiants are depending on you! |

Back when I was growing up we had a doe head mounted on the fieldstone fireplace at the cottage my great grandparents built. My father told me that it was a doe that had wandered out on the ice one spring and fell through. Someone in my family recovered the doe and in exchange for some venison a taxidermist mounted the head and she wound up above the fireplace!
![]() As for boneheads skimming across open water, does the state have a statute that would require the owner/operator to pay for the cost of the rescue effort similar to the way hikers have to pay for rescue crews etc if they are found to be negligent and the way the Coast Guard can sue folks who call in false maydays for the cost of the search and rescue operation! A few of those bills and skimming might be reduced! ![]() |

Just read your post Nadia, and believe it or not, I'm registered in Meredith as a Republican so I suppose I'm a Wal-Mart Republican. Whenever I head over to the Gilford Wal-Mart for a $7.54 quart of high quality Rustoleum paint, I like to stop at the Wendy's and get a baked potato, small salad, a small chile, and a freebie cup of water, all for $3.23 total, tax included. Is there any chance I could get a freebie Nadia's dinner introductory offer, super Winnipesaukee.com special, and I'll make the switch from Wendy's to Nadia's Trattoria with no regrets. Salud!
