Default Well, the baby is about to turn One Year Old and we want to hear Loons.........help??

As most of you know already, we will be there in a week and a half. Our gorgeous grand-daughter will be one year old, already, on September the 8th.

Last year I was up there alone for the impending birth, so was very distracted. This year, however, DH and I will be there together. We have a love of Loons. Our front license plate is a loon. We have wooden loons in our entertainment center. I bought my DH a stuffed loon, which yodels when stroked.

DO any of you have a wonderful spot for Loon Listening? We are staying at the Birchwood Inn on Weirs Blvd. Maybe if we just shut up on the patio? Or do you call it the porch?

Down here at the www.LakesideInn.com in Mount Dora, we call it a verandah.
In any case, we can't wait to be there, and hear the loons.

Pepper, I hope we can get there, but time is short. But the other place was a disappointment for $15.

Never enough time. Can't move back, though.

Anyway, you're always close to my heart. I hate it there, but I love it so much. Does anyone else feel that way?

Default Yikes...........sent you to Las Vegas.....bad....

I meant to direct you to this place.......www.lakeside-inn.com

Anyway, this is what appeases us 'til we can get back up to the Lake.

No Loons here, but lots of peepers, and warm nights.

However, wonderfullly cool, crisp (not freezing) nights in the winter. The smell of woodsmoke is in the air.

Oh.......I am ready for the Holidays.

Will you have a boat to access the lake, or will you be trying to listen from the land?

You may want to check into a loon clock. I believe they have them at the Mills Falls Marketplace (not sure which store). I received on for a Christmas present and I love it. The "loon" calls twice on the hour.

Thumbs up Loons

Lady Di, believe it or not, there are loons in Paugus Bay, and on quiet evenings you can actually hear them calling. By the time you get here the area will be considerably quieter than now, and with any luck you will be able to hear them from your patio at Birchknoll. My sister-in-law lives very near there and hears them often in the spring, and after Labor Day.

When you check-in, ask specifically, and maybe they'll have some suggestions also!

I'll bet you're counting the days!!!!!!!!!! Hope everything about your visit is wonderful!

The loons were quite vocal all weekend up around Hanson Cove/Greens Basin in Moultonborough. Beautiful sounds.

Lady Di, if you are truly lakeside in Florida, you can still see loons, but they do not vocalize after migration from northern lakes. (Except in Hollywood movies like "The Pelican Brief").

They will be a mottled brown in color, like juvenile loons. They still "behave" like loons, holding their heads slightly upwards, and diving for long periods in Florida lakes and saltwater shorelines.

I saw a "raft" of six loons last week on Winnipesaukee, so the loons are still out there...and expect some will still be around into October.

But somewhere out there on Winnipesaukee is a loon that needs a "tune-up".

His call ("the wail"), is supposed to go:
A-Wooooooooooooooooooooooo...(like a lonely wolf might sound) but instead goes:

A-WoooooooooEEEEEEeeaahoooooo.

He needs a-talkin'-to.

On another "note", Canada Geese flew overhead this morning in fine song. (Well, fine honk).

Is this a sign that this incredibly beautiful, warm weather of these past weeks may be ending sometime soon? (90's called for on September 12th)

BTW: Your "www.LakesideInn.com" link appears to be a Lake Tahoe site. I'd be curious about the Mt. Dora inn you mentioned.

Question Did you hear any loons?

Lady Di, I'm sorry I missed you when you dropped by to say hello the other day. I usually don't arrive at work until 11:00 AM, and it sounds as though I just missed you.

I hope you enjoyed your stay at BirchKnoll. The family who own and operate that property seem to do a lovely job, and their guests always rave about their stay.

Did you get to hear any loons?????????????

Hi Pepper.

We JUST missed you by about 15 minutes, I think. We were on our way to M'chester. Rates at Birchknoll were about to double for NASCAR weekend, so we had to leave early. And the drizzly weather made for a very sad departure. It's amazing how quickly the time went by.

No, sadly didn't get to hear any loons this trip. Some years back we spent a week on Lovell Lake in Sanbornville, right on the water, and we heard them every night at dusk, but mostly at 5 a.m. as they swam right by the bedroom window. They are so beautiful. First time I ever heard one was when my family was staying at White Lake State Park in Tamworth. Dad and I were walking to the beach at dusk, and the wail made my hair stand on end. I asked Dad what that was, and when he told me it was a loon, I thought he meant a "loonie" and was even MORE afraid. Thanks for asking. We sat out front at the Birchknoll every evening, just listening, but no such luck. I will have to be satisfied with my little stuffed loon with the squeeze box.

I couldn't believe how gorgeous the weather was when we arrived last SUnday, the 11th. Perfect. One of those days that makes me wish I still lived there, and that's good, because if I DID still live there, I wouldn't feel the same. Make sense? Get out before the snow fly s, I say.

We did all the things we wanted to do, including going to the coast, eating at Newick's..........my son and the baby were with us that day. What a good day we had. Hubby had to have his Hart's fix, so we did that the last night.
I pick up the pictures later today. Can't wait to see the ones of the baby's party. AND...........I can't wait til next year when we get to visit again.

I missed the ForumFest by one day, but enjoy looking at the pictures. Pepper, are you in the front row on the left?

AcresPerSecond...........enjoyed your wail, yodel, tremolo and hoot. I saw those clocks that you mentioned, and also a "loon flute" that looked pretty interesting, but not for $15!!!!

It's nice to go away, but it's good to be home. (well, it will be when it's cooler............)
