Chair Lift

We installed an Acorn stairlift in our lake house in 2013 so that my wife could continue to visit after becoming wheelchair dependent. She passed in June and I would like to remove the stairlift.For a fee Acorn will remove it and reinstall it in a new location. I a wondering if anyone has suggestions as where to find someone needing a stairlift.

First, very sorry to hear of your loss. Even though we do not know one another, please accept my condolences and thoughts.

The first thought that comes to mind is perhaps to check with the local senior centers, Over 55 Communities, or even local condo complexes to see if any of their residents may have such a need. We are presently going through the stairlift exercise for my in-laws in FL, and in order to install the units, we, (they), need to get approval from the Condo Association / Facilities Dept.
The other thought that comes to mind is the usual classified ads, Craigslist, etc

We are working with Stannah Stairlifts in FL and they claim that there is no after-market for these units, but I am sure that is their positioning to be able to keep selling new units. As I'm sure you know, the cost of these lifts is not trivlal, so I have to believe that if there is someone who has the need, they would definitely be interested in a gently-used one.

Try Habitat for Humanities in Plymouth....great organization and they may have a need.

What is the price range of these units. I realize stairs vary widely but is this a $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000 item? Thanks

Call Servicelink NH or GSIL (Granite State Independent Living). They may be able to find someone who needs one and remove the stair lift.

Hi Secondcurve--

We were quoted $4K for each lift by Stannah Stairlifts in FL. My in-laws require 2 units, as they have 2 sets of stairs to leading to their 2nd floor condo. So, $8K total for them. (Why a couple in their 80's bought a 2nd floor condo where there's no elevator, I'll never know, but we'll leave that one alone...

)

Their condo complex also requires that the units be removed and the stairs patched/repaired to their original condition when the in-laws, (or their estate), sells the condo. The stairlift co. will remove the units for a fee "to be determined at that time" and they claim that their is no after-market for used stairlifts. So, it would seem that the $8K, plus the de-installation cost, plus the stair patch/repair cost, is all a sunk cost. However, if the in-laws need the units to get into their home, there's not much choice.

Yah second curve, I was in the trade for years..(Have the crushed discs to prove it) I know it seems odd, but there's not much of a used market for these..Especially if there's a curve. Which is bent for your house alone. If it's a straight shot. usually there's some kind of stop mechanism at the top. They remove that and run the thing onto the top landing. Then separate the track halves. and remove the screws from the mounts. take the whole lot out the door. The distance from the first floor carpet, to the nose of the top landing is your A-B. Anyone with your A-B or less, can use it. They would simply cut the overage off the top with a bandsaw. retaining the same overrun (Distance from the top step nosing to the top end of track.) You could advertise model, condition, and A-B in Craigslist and see what happens. usually though. A rig that cost 3-4K will fetch under a grand..$700 maybe in good nick.. A Masonic Lodge that I go to often were gifted an acorn stair lift, all they had to do was remove it. It had been installed for the giftor's parents. The Lodge was able to remove it, and modify it, with assistance from Acorn, so it could be installed in the Lodge. Came out great. According to Acorn, there's a market for used units.

Thanks for all the suggestions. The stairlift cost me $10,500 in August 2013 and has a turn since you enter our home on a landing and go up to the main floor or down to a bedroom.
