Lake distance

I want to know where the farthest lake distance is on Winnipesaukee if I stood on the shore and the view is unimpeded by any islands? I'm guessing from the southeast shore in Wolfeboro and looked toward Center Harbor. But can any of you lake experts narrow it down to a cove or a point etc? Some lucky folks must have quite a vast view!

'Long View', the name of Bob Behre's mega-million dollar mansion which is for sale, perched atop clay point in Alton, has a view down the broads all the way to Center Harbor, and you can actually see the Mount Washington's winter anchorage if you look at it through binoculars. Without binoculars, the Mount appears as a blurred bright white spot depending on the sunshine reflection.

Talk about a serious Alton view tax? No wonder Bob wants to sell it, and move to Maine.

That's the spot I would have mentioned as well --

Years back, we GPS'd the distance and it was somewhere in the range of 13 miles (or so)

Actually the point just south of Roberts Cove has the longest view at 17 miles to Center Harbor, and the reverse look obviously as well. The Clay Point distance to Center Harbor is only 16.25 miles.

In order to see Center Harbor, Clay Point would need to be approximately 260 feet above lake level. I don't think it is that high.

Nah, the horizon is about 1 mile per foot above the surface, so about 17' to see the shoreline at Center Harbor and at water level to see the mount docked there.

We had a discussion on this before but I can't remember what the calculation was but I was astounded. I found this calculator on-line. It appears to be about 200 feet.

Yep, I stand corrected, Pineneedles. I was reading a chart wrong.

But also that 200' is to see the beach at Center Harbor, so likely about half that to see buildings on the hill at Center Harbor.

Too much math and calculations involved here ..... me thinks I'll just take a ride over there tomorrow afternoon in the boat and see what I see ......

These screen shots from Google Earth pretty much tell the story. Although that view does pass thru Two Mile Island it goes thru a clearing. Pretty tight window.

So if I understand this graph correctly, if I'm sitting on my pwc at a 4ft eye height above the water, I could only see the water about 2.5 miles before losing it behind the curvature?

That's how I read it too. Seems crazy but science is hard to argue with.

It all depends how many beers you've had.

It also depends on the Air Temperature directly over the lake..Lets say 15 feet or so... AND Lake Water Temperature, and Humidity. Mirages can distort what you see as well.
