....saw a bobcat?

Just yesterday, Wednesday, Sept 10; I saw a light colored beige cat cross the Meredith Neck Rd at the swampy area just before the entrance to Camp Monotomy. Thinking it may have been a lynx or a fisher cat or something.....me-thinks it was maybe a bobcat .... after looking at photos via google. No, it was definitely not a fisher cat, and was probably a member of the lynx cat family ....... probably a bobcat due to the shape of its ears....maybe a lynx...maybe a bobcat?

In that swampy area of Camp Monotomy, I have seen a black bear, a fox, numerous deer, wild turkeys and now a bobcat or lynx.

Quite possibly a bobcat, population is up now that they have a stable food supply - wild turkeys. No Lynx live this far south.

A friend of ours live trapped bobcats in this area a few years ago, UNH/F&G program to put tracking collars on them. A local transfer station was a busy spot for bobcats.

Who said anything about killing a bobcat??? Do you understand the words "live trap" and "tracking collar" ???

The UNH/F&G program was to better understand and to protect the species. We are pleased that the species is on the rebound as is the friend that did the live trapping.

The tranquilized cat had the collar on and was about to be released.

Now, I only got to see it for about 10-seconds as it raced across the paved road ahead of my car, but it looked pretty much like the cat in the photo above.

You're lucky to have seen it, bobcats tend to be more nocturnal rarely spotted during daylight hours out in the open. I have seen several while I have been out hunting and normally it's been either well before sun up or dusk. I did however see one this spring out on Bear Island, right in the middle of the day and it was no more than about 30 yards away from me. That's rather odd behavior but pretty cool to have such and up close look at one. That cat however didn't stick around to long, and from what I could tell it seemed to be more interested in the deer it was chasing. Being in such hot pursuit my only thought is that doe may have just dropped a fawn that cat had dinner plans for.

OK, here are two photos that I took June 2006 in West Alton. On a morning walk on 11A I came across this female laying on side of the road, just hit by a car, maybe about to die. Ran home for the cell phone and camera. Called the police ACO and F&G and raced back.

Just as I got there she jumped up onto the stone wall and went on the lookout. Later determined she was trying to to move kits across the road when she got hit. (one did not make it).

A once in a lifetime experience.
