When are we gonna get relief from this winter?
Is this winter ever gonna let up? I know it's still winter, but do we really need to have a storm every few days and these bitterly cold temps? I'm ready for spring, summer, boating, beach, bikinis, flip flops, and bbq's.

Dramatic snow/ice melting starts today!
We are finally entering a stretch of sunny milder weather for the next couple of weeks. Even a chance of a storm next weekend is nothing more than an impotent attempt by Old Man Winter...probably rain. GFY old man!
With temps this week going into the 40s and lots of sun, southern exposed areas will melt rapidly with the sun so high. This is when the lake starts to rise. An early sign of the ice starting to come undone. It's also the time for dock posts, encased in ice, to be pulled up and heave. The end of Feb is typical "low tide" for Winnipesaukee. The lake level has dropped to 2.71 (see below on black). With the snow pack and milder temps I would expect the lake to at least start it's steady rise this week. Here is where we sit today (BLACK). It's only up from here. Lake temp 31 at Lakeport 642 cfs d/c at Lakeport Dam Just some thoughts while I watch the melting...it's been a long winter but we are finally about to see and hear some things we haven't in a while! leaving NH for good this coming fall
I've decided I'm all done with winters in NH. I'm saving up as much as I can, then leaving for South Carolina after the holidays. I know they had snow this year an last, but it still wasn't anything like this here. I can't take it anymore. I'm all done.

It was nice watching the reflection of Laconia's lights shimmering on the water of Paugus Bay last night, even if that water is just a puddle on top of the ice. For the first time in a while it looked ice free. Soon enough.
There's almost enough open water in my cove to take my annual birthday raft ride. By next week we should be good to go! Hard to imagine but the water will be just about at my waist in a few weeks. |

This cove is pretty active during pre-spawn with the rocks and walls heating up the shallows. There's a nice drop to 30" just off the docks, but you probably already know that.
I have a new weapon against the geese this spring. My drone is ready to go. It will be fun chasing those rats with wings back into the lake. The camera will provide some fun interactions. Last edited by PaugusBayFireFighter; 03-26-2015 at 08:22 PM. |
