Seriously, that looks like one of those discards that dock builders saw off a piling to make a sharp point for driving. They are very heavy. I recovered two last year—hauling them aboard a boat with very little freeboard—and with difficulty.

I was going to pick it up but by the time I turned the boat around the birds (terns) were back wake surfing agian. You should have seen them hang 10.
Plus I have hit stuff as big as that board with no damage to the boat not that I like to but it does happen.I really would not want to hit it water sking.
I knew I was going to catch flack on this but the birds were there first.

Screw the birds, not like they are an endangered species or something like that. You never know a piece of floating wood like that itself can do damage and 9 times out of 10 they have nails protruding which is even worse. Not harping on you, just give that some thought next time you see something like that.

I find myself in complete agreement with Pineedles.

SB... nice pictures.. and thanks for the warning.. I always watch for "junk" in the lake... sometimes it's not possible to pick it up... sometimes it is.

Sunset Bob was smart to keep a distance from those ferocious birds!

The picture and subsequent posts remind me of a story my great uncle told me about one of the last remaining pirates that cruised the big Lake many a year ago.....it goes somrhting like this:

Many years ago a tourist met an Old Winnipesaukee pirate in a bar at the Weirs (down by one of those new fangled fluorescent signs) and they took turns recounting their adventures in life. Noting the pirate's peg leg, hook and eye patch, the tourist asked, "So, how did you end up with the peg leg?"
The pirate replied, "We was caught in a monster storm off the Broads and a giant wave swept me overboard. Just as they were pullin' me out, a great big snappin’ turtle appeared from the deep and bit off me leg!"
"Whoa!" said the tourist. "What about the hook?"
"Ahhhh," mused the pirate, "we were gonna board the old Mount, pistols blastin' and swords a swingin'. In the fracas, me hand got chopped off."
"Yikes," said the tourist. "And how did you come by the eye patch?"
"A seagull droppin' fell into me eye," said the pirate.
"You lost your eye to a seagull dropping?" the tourist asked.
"Well," said the pirate, "it was me first day with the hook."

I have a feeling that if the board was a bigger threat, it would have been picked up. There are far more damaging things in the lake at this time of year, I think that this was a general "heads up", a reminder that this is the time to keep an eye out for the very many floating objects. Everybody should be aware when they are out and about, there is no blaming the other guy, it's personal responsibility. Bob, thank you for sharing a great picture!

Well don't waste your time. I was out on the lake this last weekend and found it. There were no birds so I runned it over. Yup I runned it over but good ! Then I came about and runned it over a few more times because, as we all know, tern about is fair play. The twin SS whirring blades 'o' death on the B3 made toothpicks out of it. So no more hazard, no more rest stop for wayward birds and if you get a splinter in your butt .... well I apologize.

Question: What happens when a computer engineer and a nukie decide to make the Lake safer?

Answer: Another Lake story is born!

One Saturday morning around 10:30 BC (Before Coronas) Geo spotted a large log floating out in the middle of the bay.

Geo: "Geeze, that's a big one. We can't just leave it there but if we bring it into shore what will we do with it"?

Misty: "Humm, I've got it! We'll sink it"!!!!

Geo: "Coool"!

So without consulting the spcific gravity tables or any other useful reference materials we set off on our adventure. Loading a big rock and about 10 feet of old dock line into the sea nymph we got underway.

With a firm hand on the tiller of my blue smoking Johnson 15 I headed out into the bay. Soon my trusty lookout, Geo cried "Thar she blows"!!! And we maneuvered along side of the menacing hazard.

Now this is the time when clear headed professionals stop, size up the situation and develop an action plan. But not us. We were iron fisted men of the sea, on a mission from God and we needed action and we needed it now!

So we took our rock and tied it to the end (yes, the end) of the log and let her slip into the briny deep and settle down into Davey Jones's locker. And down it went. Rock end first. It's nose getting burried in the botton and it's end floating upright about 18 inches from the surface.

"OMIGOSH" I said. "We have just planted a mine field in the middle of Braun Bay"! "We gotta get it back". Discussing the situation, the solution was obvious. Bearing my chest I slipped into pirate mode and with my swiss army knife clinched between my teeth, over the side I went.

My task was to shinny down the slippery pole and to cut the line holding the rock. On the second attempt we were free! In a sort of backwards Dr. Strangelove way I rode the log back to the surface as it launched itself from the bottom like a Saturn 5 rocket. (Don't you hate it when you get water up your nose?)

"OK buddy" I said to Geo. What's our plan "B"? Simple, bigger rock and deeper water. Never say die.

Somewhere between 5 Mile and Johnathan's at the bottom of the Lake a monster lies dormant. We had hog tied, towed, weighted down and stowed the great danger in the bay and laid it to rest.

The noontime activities started to increase in the bay as two Good Samaritans headed back to the barn knowing that we had done our bit "For Duty and Humanity".....NYUK...NYUK...NYUK.

I'm not the talented writer that you are but perhaps you could pen a sequel ... something like what happens when that monster log works its way loose from the rope and torpedos to the surface. Maybe it will strike the Mount Washington and precipitate a disaster similar to the Posiedon Adventure. This could keep us reading for several years.

Sunset Bob Dylan, yeah, that's it. This thread has got me howling.

I thought the pictures from Sunset Bob were great and I never expected controversy. I only wondered how close to sunset time these photos were shot.

I would have done what SB did. Took pictures and left the birds alone on their little float. A judgment call of course. Besides, I don't know what kind of birds are protected and what kind I can pester and shoo away. I just know not to feed them or run them down.

So, what constitutes a reportable hazard? Normal flotsam and jetsam, spring debris, major log in the lake? What is the delineation point where normal becomes something requiring action? How many of you (us) would have seen the board in time to miss it without the birds marking it for us .

Many boaters pull stuff (like that board and larger) out of the Lake. Thank you. SB did turn to try to get the board but the birds beat him back to it.

In this situation I would have left the birds and board alone. In my case, boating alone and not being 100% able bodied, I would not have risked removing it. I could only call for assistance and watch until someone else removed the hazard. I don't think I would have called the Marine Patrol on that one.

By the way, what exactly was that saying, "Who was the fisherman first to cast stoned" (something like that...).

We once found a log floating in the lake and pulled it out. It appeared to be a post used in the old days for guard rails along the road. What to do with it we thought? After a while we finally decided. All the kids carried it to a friends cottage and slipped it behind the front door. Excellent door stop!

I must try to redeem myself. In my travels this weekend I kept a close eye for floating debris but there is not much out there right now.I did manage to find 2 pieces 1 just south of FL3 and 1 just east of Mink Island.

Yep, a Navy slang term....from back when bubbleheads like me & Misty Blue served on nuclear powered ships (or boats). The guys that were assigned duties aft in reference to the reactor were known as "Nukes".

Not absolutely sure if the term was also used on the surface by those same type engineering folks working the reactors topside. I never served in the surface fleet, only submarines. Never liked the idea of being a target!
