He isnt wrong. Have the same thoughts with the Laconia selectman even discussing the purchase of another downtown building.

Laconia doesn't have Selectman.
Laconia uses the CITY format with a City Council. One councilor elected to represent each ward and a mayor-at-large elect by all the city voters. The mayor controls the meeting agenda, but only votes when a tie-breaker is necessary. This difference is important in the budgetary/taxation process, as the residents of Laconia do not get to directly vote on either the municipal or school budgets. They can have some input during public comment... but it isn't binding like a town format. The towns have two formats - traditional and SB2 - the rules vary a bit between the two; but the residents can have a direct effect on the budget rather than a representative effect. |

If you Google Laconia NH school budget, this pops up:
School board approves 2023-24 budget over grant funding ... The Laconia Daily Sun https://www.laconiadailysun.com › news › local › school... May 3, 2023 — The budget is just over $44.6 million, with an increase of 5.2% to its operating budget over last fiscal year... 1840 students, so about $24,000 per pupil. It appears that the school budget comes up later in the year, proposed by the school board and then approved by the City Council. Last edited by Descant; 03-14-2024 at 12:06 PM. The Alton proposed budget of $10,269,813 was just voted down 396 yes and 522 no. This results in the default budget of $9, 521,748. The current BOS hopefully learned a good lesson. Several other large budget items were also shot down.
