Watching the WMUR news tv, and reading the NH State Police report ... http://www.nhsp.dos.nh.gov/news-and-...-crescent-lake .... it seems that the jetski with the deceased 16-year old boy was following another jetski driven by a teen age male when the jetski in front slowed down and the following jetski drove into the lead jetski.
"one of the jetskis appeared to have serious damage .... the handle bars had come off, the padding had come off ..... totally ran over" No mention on how fast the two jetskis were going at the time of this 2nd jetski crash from behind into the 1st leading jetski? A jetski is maybe capable to go 50-mph or faster, and jetski drivers are required to wear a pfd, and will have a kill switch lanyard that may be attached to wrist.

This is absolutely terrible.
I have seen a lot of close calls with this same situation. Since jetskis don't have brake lights, it only takes a second to miss the lead driver stopping and, without "brakes," the tail vehicle(s) being unable to stop. I can't imagine losing a child; my thoughts go out to the parents and family. Sent from my SM-S911U using Tapatalk |

The natural instinct when you get into a close encounter is to let off the gas and slow down.
Many people don't realize that in a PWC or a Jet boat the steering is almost non existent while you are slowing down. In some situations a couple of quick throttle inputs will steer you out of trouble. |

I'm surprised accidents like this don't happen more often. I frequently see jet ski's ignoring the 150ft rule and aggressively changing their speed and direction of travel with complete disregard to who is around them. In my opinion, this behavior will not change until the Marine Patrol starts ticketing them.

Really sad to hear about this. Hope it works as a lesson to others that there really is a good reason for the 150 ft rule and future tragedies are prevented.

So they were operating without licenses? That could introduce a large liability issue somewhere here

There is no mention in the article that the kids lacked the proper boating certificate... any 150' violation is just speculation. I think it is an accident that occurred mostly due to inexperience of both operators.
