Anyone monitor Winnipesaukee water temp over time?

I feel like its warming up slower this year, or am I just impatient,,,

With the recent temps and sunny days and lack of rain, I expected the water temp to be a few degrees higher.

Anyone know where we stand on this?

I always thought the higher the humidity the warmer the lake temp. Is this a myth or am I correct in thinking this?

I should remember this from college but that was too many years ago for me ;-)

There is a formula for heat exchange (air temp to water temp), but I think the bigger impact is just sunny day solar energy imparted on the surface of the water.

Maybe someone else can actually answer that???

Yup much below say 78 degrees F is a bit cool for me,,, But then our pool was 90 degrees on Sunday and that was way too hot! ;-)

I pulled the thermometer I keep at the end of my dock yesterday to see what water temp was. It hangs 6 ft down. It read 82! I dove in and yikes, no way. I think I need a new thermometer.

It's not myth, and humidity does factor in. As the dew point of air climbs out of the 50s (nice and dry!) into the low 60s (noticeably humid), and into the 70s (downright muggy - tropical), the rate of evaporation of water at the lake surface is retarded significantly. Turning a lb of water from liquid to steam (humidity in the air) takes about 1,000 BTU/lb. That heat comes mostly from the water itself and tends to chill the water. So you have two effects working against each other. A hot day's air and direct exposure to the sun's rays tend to warm up the surface water, while evaporation from the surface tends to cool it.

When you climb out of the water on a humid day, evaporation of water from your skin is a lot slower than on a dry day, so you don't feel the cooling as much as on the dry day. Similarly, after a prolonged hot, humid spell, which has warmed up the surface water considerably, a Canadian front bringing in dry air on the breeze enhances evaporation, and the surface water is cooled notably in short order.

While having nice warm water may be pleasant for hanging around in the water, we shouldn't want too much of that, as warm water temperature tends to work against water quality and general health of the lake.

The link on this website showed 71 degrees at 11 AM and 75 at 4 PM.

That is a pretty big increase!

It has been slow to raise. We were saying the same thing up until last Friday.
Monday 7/4? w/ the clouds and wind in the afternoon chilled me to the bone, had to put a shirt on to warn up.

For keeping warm suggest you look at the O'Neill Thermo fleece top designed for cold water swimming, best worn under a wet suit vest, down to about sixty degrees and colder with a full wet suit. This is NOT a wet suit. This is either a short sleeve or long sleeve, very tight fitting, black FLEECE top that gets very wet and good for wearing alone, or under a wet suit vest, a farmer john, or a full wet suit, or under a dry suit (have yet to actually do that).

Since late May, I've been swimming about 150-yards in 7-acre Corcoran's Pond in Waterville Valley which is about 5-10 degrees colder than Lake Winnipesaukee, especially after a rain fall. This tight fitting, black O'Neill Thermo top gets soaking wet but SOMEHOW, it really keeps in the heat in my chest area where it is most needed and works best under a wet suit vest for water 60+ degrees.

I also use a 28" x 2", $2.99 foam noodle swim belt tied tight around the waist because it is not too safe to be swimming in cold water that is over one's head, alone, and it works good for the side stroke and breast stroke and back stroke. It'll probably be good with the crawl, too.

Swimming Lake Winnipesaukee is more difficult due to the happening, big, wide open water movement from wind, waves and boat wakes.

Looks like we just hit 76 degrees yesterday, I think thats the highest this year!

As an aside,,, my pool broke its previous temp record of 92 degrees yesterday, the new record is now 95 degrees!

Overnight it dropped back to 89 degrees, which is almost cold by comparison,,,
