I have a 7.4l mercruiser that starts right up and idles fine and goes into forward and reverse with no problem. However, it will not throttle up whether in reverse or forward, or even in the neutral position. The cable looks fine at both the shift end, and the other end at the carburetor, any suggestions??

First thought is carburetor fouling, perhaps due to fuel stored too long without stabilizer added.

I found the problem. Throttle cable broke inside the lining. Pulled right out when I disconnected it from the carburetor. Never had that happen before. I overdose every motor I own (with a carburetor), with Startron fuel stabilizer, and have NEVER had to rebuild, or replace a carburetor (yet!!) in anything for over 25yrs. Stuff works amazing. Highly recommend it if you're not using it.

Ditto Cal Coon, had the same issue a few years back, a real mystery at first, but after a visit by a mobile marine tech who diagnosed.
