As I reflect on what I thought were chores opening my Uncle's property in West
Alton on Memorial Day Weekend, I now relish the imbued memories of days gone by. Put up storms, put down screens, turn on silcocks, turn on the outdoor shower, put the dock ladder on its respective hinges. Most of these accomplished before dunking the Donzi at Ames Farm and returning to the boat house. Truly it was the start of summer magic at the lake for another season. We should all be grateful for the freedoms that we enjoy, and for the time spent at really one of Mother Natures finest the Lake, and the memories now instilled at the only place I ever felt naturally intoxicated, and relaxed, "The Cottage". With life and work taking up most of my days, I so look forward to a day on the lake. Yes to all of you full timers up there, the jealousy and envy is greener than the darkest pines. Relish what you have, and the sense that we as boomers have survived the '60s and will rock with whatever else is to come! Stay safe on the water, and enjoy! |

I too have fond memories, from a different perspective. My dad, mom and I doing part time work on the side opening and closing camps for others. Winterizing the water system, putting docks away and reversing the process in the spring. During the summer doing maintenance, taking trash to the dump and in the winter shoveling snow off the roof. As I recall they worked for about $3/hour but put away for a nice retirement. Dad never charged the customers for my time until I was about 15 but well remember being dragged out of bed on a Saturday to go lug storm windows complaining about it the while time.
Growing up and living in such an area is something I would not change for the world. |

Well said Rander7823. All of the freedoms that we enjoy today are a gift from generations of heroes, great and small, who came before us. Memorial Day is all about remembering those people, appreciating their gift, and hopefully ... for a few anyway ... recommitting to the selfless spirit that once made our nation great.

I think the current youth generation is way better than the generation of old people sitting at their computers trying to be relevant on a forum about a lake by bashing everything.

Let's not forget that the "current" generation are the ones that are also protecting our way of life as well as fighting (and dying) for us on foreign soil.
Out of respect,...probably not the best topic (new generation bashing) to be discussed over the Memorial Day weekend... The original post was beautiful and respectful and it should stay that way. Dan

"Fair enough, Dan. I deleted my post..."
Ditto. That being said, I have about a dozen ex-students currently serving in the military--from officers at West Point and the US Air Force Academy to grunts in the Army, Navy, and Marines--and this thread inspired me to write them a letter of thanks. Cheers, all! |
