On a whim I headed up to Winni for a quick overnight Thursday. Before retiring for the night I stepped out onto the deck overlooking Wolfeboro Bay. Was I glad! An otherwise silent night (it was rather late) was broken by the call of the loons. They were loud and frequent. The acoustics of the lake can be misleading but it sounded as though it came from the Barndoor /Varney islands. Ah Spring.

Being a lover of loons, I came upon this live loon cam over the
weekend. It reminded me of the time that BI had the live duck cam and how so many of us enjoyed watching the nest. The nest isn't on Lake Winnipesaukee but it is on a lake. http://www.mnbound.com/live-loon-cam/ |

I had the PWC out and about on Sat. I was checking out the rocks along Roberts Cove and Plum I. and I saw one on the sand ramp, on Plum I, not 20 ft away. Nested ???? I backed off slowly so as not to disturb her/him. There was another out fishing off the end of the island so perhaps they were a pair ? Anyway if you venture into the cove be aware they might be nesting on Plum.

Spotted this loon about a week ago, right off the beach on the central Jersey shore. (Asbury Park)

Just wanted to report on the loons wintering down here at the Jersey shore. They are starting to get their summer plumage. Heads are turning back to black and white marking on neck is starting to appear. Looks like they're getting ready to head to the beautiful clear lakes up north.
