From the BoatUS Foundation website: “When hailing other boats for routine communication, you'll need to hail them on 16 or 09, and then move to an available working channel, usually 68, 69, 71 or 72.” There are various other references as well and none state anything about allowing brief conversations. Hail, make contact, move to another frequency. But alas, with cell technology this is all going the way of the Dodo!
