Wood picnic tables that live outside all the time should be painted all over, everywhere, so they don't get yucky, and become water saturated and moldy, plus they look much better.

Old yucky wood picnic tables can be renewed by totally dryng them out, and starting with two coats of Valspar exterior latex gray primer.

Tinted gray latex exterior primer and two coats of a hard surface exterior gloss keep it for years and years. Also, placing those 68-cent gray concrete bricks under each leg keeps the moisture from traveling up the legs. Repaint the upper surfaces maybe every three year, or so.
