Also, my 4Runner has a screen and backup camera, and they're both perfect and very welcome. Implementing it clumsily is just clumsy implementation.

Oh not saying they weren't out before backup cameras were mandated, just that unless you were buying a car with a GPS or other OPTIONAL features in it there was never a need for a screen in your dash. Now there is no choice as backup cameras are mandated by law. Does it make anyone back up better? Nope, but it guarantees you're car will cost more.
Frankly those in dash busy box screens I find to be extremely distracting and I can't stand them. I have to fight with technology all day long for work the last thing I need is a stupid car that wants to think for me too.
