Not knowingly. But history is littered with stories of things that were considered "safe" at the time and later known to be otherwise.

As another poster has noted, you are dammed if you do, and dammed if you don't. But in my way of thinking, I'll take the DEET spray to keep them away. Carpet bombing the whole area and potentially killing beneficial insects doesn't seem to be the way to go. Not to mention shoveling against the tide. We do live in thousands of acres of woods.
