I do the same thing. For me:
"-" is a hyphen
"--" is a dash.
If you use just a hyphen when you want a dash, spellcheck and auto-correct often get confused. Spelling: many writers just don't bother to proofread and edit, which is difficult on most smart devices. I attribute many spelling errors these days to the software: to, two, too, your, yore, you're, their, they're, there, etc., etc., etc.
