The Vintage races in Wolfeboro work because of relatively low overhead, and the races can be seen from shore.

If you go to Key West for the races... the boats run right along the shoreline for approx 1/2 - 3/4 mile or so...

Not to detract for the popular "negativity" for the dive, but yeah, this could help make this (or any other) boat race a bigger event if you could catch a ride and watch it on the lake. *gasp at the thought*
