OP, if you have natural gas, hands down it is the cheapest way to go and should be that way for the long term. That's what I would do in your shoes, it will pay back the quickest and be cheap and reliable for a long time and you can probably use your existing ducts. Pretty sure the global warming debate was initiated by Major, not one of the heat pump advocates. With the later only pointing out that virtually every scientist in the world is in agreement on climate change. So let's stick to the OP's question.

As someone with both a gas system and electric heat pumps, I am not at all sure that conventional natural gas is less expensive than new ductless electric mini splits.
