I'm pretty certain it's an annual fee, but it would be worth it of it was monthly.

Now that Navionics is part of Garmin and includes Active Captain data, I love it and it's my go to for plotting a route. My boat has two garmin chart plotters at the helm and I now use them as backups to my ipad with Navionics on a Ram mount.

That said, I still think one should have a dedicated plotter if electronic charts are the primary cartography. Ipads are not water resistant and you'd want something made for crappy weather when things get ugly and you need accurate navigation most.
