A friend live trapped several at her barn, used a large towel over all the trap but the entrance. When a skunk was trapped, approached from the covered end and tossed another towel on to cover the entrance. Upon release uncovered the exit door and walked way back. None of the skunks ever sprayed.

As for raccoons passing up a snack; sounds doubtful to me.
