There is a formula that calculates the amount of trees that can be "legally" cut down on the shoreline without a permit. Basically, you divide the shoreline property into 50'x50' imaginary boxes. This is a very basic interpretation of the law. From what I recall there are plenty of trees in the area that the tree once stood. I don't think that it's illegal to drop the tree into the water, but I don't think that you can leave it there.

I think that it is a shame that the rope swing is gone. I can't however blame the property owner for not wanting to expose himself to a huge liability. We live in such a litigious society. No good deed goes unpunished when it comes to law suits.
